Hello,

For my honeymoon my fiancee and I are going to New York City. We have been there a few times and have always loved it. We would like to do some non-touristy things (because we are from Orlando and would prefer not to do anything fake or tourist-ish like all of Orlando is) to do. Any suggestions on cool places to eat, see shows, or just local things to do?

Okay guys. Seriously. I said non-toursity things. The empire state building and the crystler building are touristy. If you have any suggestions please give me exact places to eat, exact bars, or exact places to see off broadway theater etc. I do not want to go to the Statue of Liberty!

I live in NYC and I have to say just do what you would regularly do. I don't know if you just want to be like regular New Yorkers and such but I would recommend some places that are near tourists spots. One store I like to go to a lot would be Kinokunia and Miyamoto Kitchen which is more japanese themed like Kinokunia sells Japanese themed items and Miyamoto's sells sweets.

This might be a bit strange but I would also suggest this certain library that is not really a library. It's mostly for kids and such, I don't really remember the name right now.

Another idea would be to see a broadway show or something. My friends always go there even though they aren't tourists but be careful about prices.

The Museum of Art is a good place too. You might need a map or you'll get lost. I sure did. The entry fee is $20 per person which I don't think is too bad and the giftshop there is nice.

Medieval Times is a great place as well. As you can tell by the name what's it about. It's pretty much authentic, no forks and stuff which might be gross but I would say its closer to the real things then movies.

Liberty's Science Center is loads of fun. I've only been there twice for school trips but all the kids in my class did not want to leave. They usually have performances on the lowest floor which is cool.

You could always go somewhere for lunch like a fancy restaurant and such or go around in a taxi but McDonald's and the subway is the way to go if you don't want a touristy feel.

Hope I was of some help !

New York City has lots and lots of attractions. Most of them depend on age and your interests, but i'll list a few of my favorite.
Without a doubt, The Museum of Natural History, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Googenhiem- especially if you are into art. I'd also take a walk around Grand Central.
If Music Interests you, check out the concerts at Lincoln Center which feature The Metropolitan Opera, The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and the New York Phillharmonic. In that same area of Lincoln Center, do check out the Sony Imax Theater. 4 Stories Tall, featuring the most advanced sound system ever developed, it wows me every time. The Empire State Building is far from touristy. Seeing the city, especially at night 86 stories in the air gives you the best view of New York City, and is the best place to take pictures. Hold on to your hats- it gets windy up there. Most definatly before leaving New York City, Broadway shows I'd reccomend would be Chicago, Spring Awakining, and Rent. Off broadway you'll find Stomp(also in the east village) and Blue Man Group. Links Below. Congrats on gettin married!!! Have an awsome honeymoon.

You got alot of great places to investigate already. Don't discount "touristy" stuff. I am from Honolulu currently living by Cypress Gardens. NYC is nothing like Orlando.
I did not see helicopter ride. It's not cheap but a great way
to see the city. Boat trips around Staten Island on the ferry.
Long Island either coast at the point. Depends on what you want. Central Park, and Art museum you must go. The park u can rent a boat or play with toy ones. Eat... after a wedding brig some lazy clothes, relax and enjoy. Congratulations.
Atlantic City is close buy if u gamble but that's busy like Vegas.
Window shop, walk is way cool. FAO Schwartz, Tiffany's... People watch! Times square, go see a live TV show taped like Live with Regis & Kelly, Mike & Juliet or The View.
There is a whole theatre district so order tickets online early as they are booked up. Spring Awakenings is the best I heard. Lion King or Chorus Line, old standards.
Have a wonderful, full and playful time!!!

Things like the Statue of Liberty are wonderful things to see, and while they may be what "everyone else does" they are a part of our American History. But, and I do mean BUT, if you really want to see a different side of New York City, I suggest going to places in The Village. You can take the subway to 14th or Christopher Sts. You don't need to know names of places, because the best places are the ones you find by accident. Try to stay away from Times Square...if you don't want to do anything touristy...but if you do venture there, you can get your picture taken with the Naked Cowboy. Broadway is right off of Times Square, so you'll probably pass through it if you are going to go see a Broadway show or Off Broadway show.
But in all seriousness, most of NYC is a tourist trap. Try to stay away from mainstream restaurants, they are way expensive. Look for pizza places and small diners when you are walking. I don't suggest taking taxi's if you don't have an exact destination in mind, the cab drivers are crazy and you don't want to be in their car for a long time. Also, if you want to buy souvenir's shop with the street vendors, you can find some cool stuff there to remember your honeymoon with. While your up our way, try taking a ferry ride in the harbor. It is very romantic at night with the lights of the city in the background.
Best wishes to you and your fiancee, and have fun on your trip!

What do you or your husband do? If either one of you is a tradesperson, the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen is in New York. A really really old building built in 1785. Amazing way to kill a day if that is your kind of thing.

Were you or your husband Scouts as children? The United States head quarters of Boy Scouts of America and Girl Guides of America is in New York. A HUGE museum of the past 100 years of scouting. 2007 is the 100th anniversary of scouting you know.

Any military history in your family. There is a very large recruiting center in New York. Kiss a little *** and they'll give you some really cool military stuff. GI teddy bears, plane models, plastic tank gun sites, all of that stuff.

New York has some of the best Jazz, Blues, R&B clubs anywhere. All you have to do is look around and not be scared to go down a dark alley or two.

I agree, don't do the tourist thing. You're starting your lives together with this person. Start it off with an adventure you'll remember for the rest of your lives. New York is just the place for that.

Maybe you would be interested in Top of the Rock. That's at Rockefeller Center and geared towards tourists, yes, but not as much as Empire State Building. And ~ you can see ESB from Top of the Rock. Eating at Rockefeller Center Cafe is cool, also.

Central Park Zoo is very cool. They have polar bears and a rain forest which is beautiful! But it's hot as you-know -what, so dress accordingly. But wow! the beautiful birds and animals in there! The sea lions are terrific, they have an awesome show during feeding time!

I just ate at a fantastic Irish pub/restaurant, Brendan's. It is at 42 West 35th Street, between 5th and 6th avenue and the food is excellent. So was the service and the place is beautiful. I'll be going back there next time I'm in the city.

The Museum of Natural History is awesome, too! Make sure you go to 4th floor ~ that's where the dinosaurs are!

If you want a low budget trip your not going to the right city. But new york is great... there's the obvios answers of time square, the statue of liberty and the empire state builing.. But there's also so great places to shop like the largest Macy's in america which is right down the street from the Empire State Building along with other great stores. There's a lot of traffic so walking is nessecary and there are lots of different resturants with food from all over the world and a chinatown... A LARGE chinatown. There's TRL in timesquare and you can go to Hotels.com to get a great hotel. The stuff there is pretty expensive but it's a great city to visit and the Park is wonderful. There's also a couple great mueseums and like 5 different parks.

I live in St. Louis now but grew up in New York City and go back often. One other response mentioned the Cloisters, but I want to emphasize how special it is. It's one of the most romantic, elegant, and serene spots in Manhattan (which is not exactly known for its serenity). Plus, if you go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Cloisters on the same day, you pay once for both museums because the Cloisters is a branch of the Met. See the Cloisters first, though, because it's smaller and the Met is open longer hours.

Take the M4 bus, which starts at Penn Station, shifts to Madison Avenue, and continues way uptown. The M4 takes you practically to the door of the Cloisters, its last stop. When you want to leave for the Met, take the M4 downtown. It ultimately heads to Fifth Avenue and will drop you off at the Met. These are long bus rides, but you'll see a lot of the city.

The Met has places to eat, but you might want to get off the M4 around 92nd Street or so, walk east to Madison Avenue, and visit Jackson Hole (91st and Madison), which has burgers, sandwiches, salads, and the like. The food is reasonably priced, tasty, and filling—and you're going to need your strength and stamina for the Met, which from Jackson Hole is about 10 blocks away on Fifth Avenue.

Have a wonderful honeymoon!

oh it is tons of fun. here are a few things to do/try:

try to get out and see a broadway musical. do some research. it is hard to recommend anything not knowing your tastes. i say avenue Q is good all around for people who like leud comedy and not so much of the singing and dancing. tickets are around 50 and upwards.

you cant skip central park. a must see on a nice warm day (which it should be).

a cool restaurnt by central park on the uptown side, is a horror themed restaurant. its a bit touristy but so fun. you HAVE to go. they have amazing pizza and its fun to watch the little show things going on. the servers are actors and they are fun to talk too.im pretty sure it is called JACKEL and HYDE.

if you want to go to a ritzy dinner, the RAINBOW ROOM is the one of the best. it'll cost you but the view is killer.

i think the empire state building is over rated. lines are killer long. i didnt think the 2 hour wait was worth it.

the MOMA. aka modern museum of art. i missed out last time but i have heard it is at least interesting even if you dont like art. it may even be funny.

take a walk down 5th ave. to see all the expensive shops that hardly anyone can afford then make a run for the barneys bargain basement or H&M to buy some real people clothes.

take a walk in times square at night. need i say more? the lights are famous.

the carnige deli by carnige hall is a famous, and yummy, deli. i recommend.

i think it is called JOES pizza? there are quite a few of them within blocks of eachother. they have cheap and good pizza and gyros. big big pizza with a small price.

you just have to soak it up and explore. just walk down a street and go in somewhere that looks interesting. and use the subway, its cheap and always an experiance. just watch your purse and other belongings.

HAVE FUN.

You should go shopping at Fairway on the upper west side at 6pm. It's great people watching and will give you a true NY experience. Very crowded, lots of hustle and bustle. Additionally, walk around central park on the weekend and watch the roller skaters and street acts as well as walk down and watch all the wedding photos being taken. One other real unique thing you can do is take the Long Island Railroad to one of the beaches for the day. Long Beach is really a great area not pretentious like the Hamptons and has some restaurants, shops... good bagels, etc.,
