Ever read the fine print and see actually how much these lawyers make? They take a HUGE cut and nothing is ever left over. Class actions are useless!

Other than the party who files the claim and his attorneys, others join in on the suit to punish bad conduct and deter it from occuring agsain, fo the public good.
If you have any real damages, you can opt to have your own attorney, and file a seperate suit, which may be consolidated with the class-action suit for judicial economy purposes.
If you don't want to spend the time and potential costs in filing a suit, and just want to be a part of the class-action, then you usually get a nominal amount upon settlement of the case.

Way to notice. Thats very true. Class action suits suck in people who think they are going to get rich when in reality the entire settlement and lawyers share is determined by the lawyers. The suite against Microsoft netted a billion dollars but the true victims got a coupon for purchase of another software program. Its the same against insurance companies, tobacco and the rest. Victims are re victimized by the lawyers who cannot be held accountable because they are controlled by other lawyers who see this as perfectly all right. You are wise beyond your years. Few notice this.

You've got a good point, but the real purpose is to punish the defendant for something its done wrong. So it's really a societal thing as opposed to the individuals being compensated for "damage". But I certainly think things have gone too far with class action lawsuits.

Because people will always hope for free money and the lawyers are more than willing to file a suit for those same people knowing they will get rich in the process, NOT YOU.

Class actions seldom provide much if any direct financial benefit to the class members; but they serve to change policies and practices. Class actions led to financial relief for thousands of sufferers of black lung disease mesothelioma & similar enviornmental diseases. They have led to elimination of asbestos from many products ; led car manufacturers to vast improvements in designing in safety; to safer microwaves, to safer airplanes, lawn mowers, tires, food mixers, TV screens, baby cribs, elevators, escalators, toys, children's clothing & food packaging. It has led to cessation of hidden charges by car rental firms, hotel chains, cell phone companies, Credit card companies, banks, insurance companies & sales of unneeded car parts by Sears Roebuck. It is true, as a member of a class, "my lawyers" got a few million dollars & all I got was a lousy $500.00 coupon toward a new pickup; but as a result my next pickup was built with a better located gas tank that is less likely to explode in a rear end crash.
