I agree that a shovel or knife can be used and I have split them in spring and in fall and all times in between - an few important things to remember are 1 - remember to water once you transplant and 2 - don't expect them to look excellent the year of transplant. Often when you split and transplant once the leaves are up, the leaves can get damaged and the transplanted plant may not bounce back as well as you would like. Don't give up hope though - the next year they will come up just fine like they have always been there.

The sharp knife is best. Be certain that you swish the knife around in bleach solution to prevent the spread of any plant diseases. Do not split hostas in the Spring as they will be as amenable as they will be in the fall. I like to divide hostas after their flower bloom. I cut off the flowers, dig them up and slash with a sterile knife. Some hostas have a juice in the roots that can cause dermatitis so I also wear garden gloves when doing this.

It may sound cruel, but once they're big enough to divide, just dig them up, pick up a large knife and carefully cut the plant in half, top to bottom. They're very forgiving, but I wouldn't recommend the shovel--the knife makes a cleaner cut. I have several hostas, and many of them are ones that were divided by other people just like it. I even had one that barely had any root left, and it still came up!

Take a good sharp shovel and go down the edges hard. It's easier to do when they are just coming out of the ground, but can be done any time. The bigger the hosta at the time of splitting, the harder it will be to dig. Have done them both ways, and believe me, mucho easier when the shoots are just coming out of the ground.

Do divide while the plant isn't turning out to be as vigorously. Hostas dont resent being divided so which you would be able to shop them to length for the spot you desire them in. I do divide mine interior the autumn September or very early Oct. shop nicely watered until settled in. i come across that way next spring Ive have been given the seem i desire and that i'm no longer disrupting the turning out to be season.
