Can someone tell me what exactly the system can do, other than play the games on it? My older son said you can do MSN Messenger on it. Can you tell me if you have to pay for that service and can you use it if you have dial up. What other features are on it?

MSN messenger on the DS? your older son is telling you incomplete statements.

if you are savvy, you can download other programs onto your DS physically, and that will turn the DS into a media bit.

if you don't go out and change the system so that it's not a DS anymore, you cannot do anything other than play games on it, or use the chat function with people that are very nearby.

it has WiFi which means that some games can play with people that are nearby, other games are able to play with other people over the computer via a wireless router (or DS usb hub)

now, if something can make the DS use msn messenger, there are no charges associated with that, just like with using it on the regular computer. in fact, the DS would need the regular computer to be online while it's messenging

All you can do is play Gameboy advance and DS games on the DS.
You can download a program called wifi that allows you to play games with other people if the games are Wifi compatable.
But other then that you cannot go online.
It was free for free to get wifi just make sure you have the correct router and internet service.
Visit the nintendo site for more details.

the system can play ds games and gameboy advance games. it has a touch screen is one of the most popular handheld gaming systems to date adn it is predicted to shatter sales records. i have one and there is nothing that is potentally harmful (or inappropriate, etc) to your child on it. there are only two M rated games and you need to be 17 to buy em any way. the system is for all ages.
there is no msn messenger. there is only pictochat in which you write/draw words or pictures that you can send over a network, you can only do that with people that are near you so it doesn't rely on internet, its ds to ds communication.

i might basically get it in black. i do no longer understand despite if it is popping out in new colorings stateside yet. yet, to this point as video games circulate, i might get Mario Kart and (while you're into all and sundry of those video games) Pokemon Diamond/Pearl or Animal Crossing Wild international. The Castlevania video games are good too.
