Because it's not what you know, it's what you think you know. It's all about perception, people react based on what they believe. Facts, or truth, which does not agree with what these people already believe, is just dismissed as falsehood.
Being right is only half the battle, you still have to get people to agree with you. It can get very frustrating.

it is the need to feel like you know more than you actually do. it is no different than the person that starts a job and a week later feels they are they are the best that ever done that job. another problem here is those that hear something on the news and blindly believe it to be fact without any further research.

edit. there is rarely any historical "fact". other than history is in the past or i was born on a certain date. history is often written from one perspective and there can be ommisions

It depends on your point of reference. To the person who has never read anything, the person who did would appear knowledgeable. History is a huge topic and very few are experts in all areas of history. What does it matter to you if they think they are an expert or not? How does that effect the way you conduct yourself.

Well I have a Bachelor's in Historical and Political Studies...and I am working on my Master's in American Foreign Policy...whenever I give an answer that is Historical Fact...I still get thumbs downs from the children on this site, because they do not like it...I find many of the off the wall posters are either teenagers or slackers...or just stupid...

Actually, history and politics have very little in common. The Mafia, on the other hand, is a prime place to learn American politics.
