Factor both numerator and denominator. Then, if there's are factors that are the same in both numerator and denominator, then "cancel" those factors (actually, you just divided those factors, in which n/n=1; and 1 times any factor is the factor itself). You then have a simplified rational expression.

It helps if you provide a sample.

Let's say you have 4/5 * 3/16

The answer will be (4 * 3) / (5 * 16)

You can write this as 12/80

Then reduce it by dividing the top and bottom by 4 and getting 3/20.

Or, when it is (4 * 3) / (5 * 16),
you can say that is (4 * 3) / (5 * 4 * 4) and take a four from the top and bottom and get 3 / (5 * 4) or 3/20.

That is the best when you have to multiply a lot of numbers. You can really make things easier for yourself.
