Some advantages of public schools could include:
1. Giving students a better chance to interact with people from different ethnic and socioeconomic groups. Private schools can sometimes be exclusive, and don't really feature a wide cross-section of students and staff.
2. Offering students more courses, activities, and interscholastic sports than private schools. Private schools tend to have limited curricular and extracurricular offerings.
3. Allowing for a greater exchange of ideas among students and between students and staff. Exposure to these ideas helps one better formulate a personal set of standards and beliefs.
4. A cost-savings, since public schools are taxpayer funded and private schools are funded by student tuition. Even with partial scholarships, private schools can be pricey!

Your question involves both quantifiable and philosophical elements. Lets first look at staffing. Most private schools are not able to be competitive with public schools in salary for teachers. This means that the best and brightest end up in the public schools. Private schools often has teachers who were unable to get jobs in the public sector or in some cases are excellent teachers who simply want to teach in a religious setting. In the west, and northwest most private schools are funded and run by a religious organization. As part of their general curriculum, they require religious studies. This takes up one or more time slots out of the day, eliminating one of the general education classes that a student would take in a public school. Having said all that, in fairness there are several advantages of sending a student to a private school. There are fewer gang related issues, less violence, and often a healthier learning environment. These schools often spend less on athletics and more on enrichment activities which produce well qualified students. Notice I didn't say anything about less sex. In the county where I grew up, the highest pregnacy rate was consistently at the Dutch Reform sponsored Christian high school. It seems the more you rant about the evils of sex, the more curious people become. Finally, there is the religious aspect of it all. This typically results in a student either becoming totally committed to that brand of religion, or becoming completely resentful of it and refusing to ever attend that church again. If you are a parent making the decision (which in this case you are not) take a look at the young person. If they are self assertive and able to handle things, send them to a public school. If they are a follower, and have self esteem issues, send them to a private school.

Public schools have more resources i.e. special education, reading recovery, speech, gifted programs. Many private schools have to bus their students to the public school for these programs or a public school teacher will goto the private school and teach.
