While it is just a blister and most people think he should be out there throwing, he has to come out. The middle finger is leverage finger in every pitch that he throws, putting a band-aid on would actually make things worse. He wouldn't get the same grip or spin on the baseball, and his pitches would do nothing. If he tries to pitch through the blister, especially a middle finger blister, it's just going to break, get infected and never heal. Also,
he can't put a new skin (blister medication) on his pitching hand because that would be applying a foreign substance to the baseball. If a pitcher gets a blister, he will miss time

He has a bad blister on the middle finger of his throwing hand. It will not be fixed with a band aid!!! That finger is essential to his pitching, and he needs to let it heal. He has had this problem in the past. Certainly, with a record of 7-0, Josh Beckett does NOT want to miss his turns in the rotation, but it is necessary so he can help the team when he is healed.
Chow!!

He needs to let that finger heal before he can grip the baseball for his pitches. Yes, he is the best pitcher in the MLB right now and will continue once he is back to 100%!
I love me some Josh Beckett!!

Red Sox are in a position right now where they can afford to let one of their Ace pitchers to take a few starts off to be sure he heals correctly. If Beckett pitches now and makes it worse, he could be on the DL for MORE than 15 days. According to the manager, he is preparing for his next start after the 15 days.

You are not allowed to pitch in MLB with any band-aid on your finger. It gives the pitcher an improved grip on the baseball and it is not allowed. Josh will be just fine after he comes back on Tuesday vs Cleveland

He needs to miss a start, it would be useless for him to go out there and pitch. You probably have never pitched before but witha cut or a blister it hampers your pitching, you cannot grip the ball as well and therefore you become less effective and all that he will end up doing is causing the cut to get worse and it will not heal and therefore he will continue to be uneffective or less effective. If he misses a start to let the cut heal then he can come back and pitch with his regular ability.

I didn't hear or see anything for certain but it may have been a blister. Beckett has had a history of blister problems going back to his Marlins days. Look at Kerry Woods, he has missed a couple weeks now with his blister problem.

Although it sounds like he is being a sissy on this thing and most people in other positions would continue on and play, but you have to remember the fingers and the touch on the ball are very important to pitchers, because the grip is what makes the ball curve, cut, split, and drop. If he has a bandaid on, it will hinder his grip, which will make him not throw correctly.

Right now, the Red Sox are the best team in baseball. they can afford for him to miss three or four starts, no matter how good he is.
