Yes they do. I've had many things happen in my life that have made be able to deal with things that maybe would have finished me off.

My Mum was murdered when I was 16, then both her parents died and then my Father met a woman half his age and married her when she got pregnant. I was then thrown out of my home at 18 as she didn't like me. I went from bedsit to bedsit, living in places unfit for dogs, until I gave myself a jolly good kick up the backside and a second job and bought my own house.I went from one abusive relationship to another and ended up with nothing again, but I had to pick myself up and start again. Life hasn't been easy but there are people so much worse of than I was, and some people who never had a bad day in their life. My past has moulded me into the person I am today, I'm now happily married with my first baby due in October.

Life can be trying at times, but you have to live with the cards you are dealt, no-one else can do it for you.

I had a very good freind who was murdered 7 1/2 years ago. 3 days before christmas. It was the only time in my life I've really understood the meaning of the word Devastated. She was only 30 years old. Within about 6 months of that, I straightened myself up, stopped doing drugs, Got a good job and really became a much better person.

The whole time between, I kept hearing her voice in my head saying "Quit F@#$ing around, You may not have time".

I am much stronger emotionally and mentally now than I was then. Not to say that I wouldn't trade it all back to have her here, but If she had to die, at least it showed me it was time to start respecting myself and strive to be the best person I can be. I owe her and myself that.

Yes they do, I have been thru alot and have come out a stronger person. Some things when you're young you don't think about happening, or that you'll ever go thru. But life has a way of smacking ya up along side your head with some things like the loss of a loved one. It hurts like hell, but you live thru it and realize you may need to change some things, and do things different to live a fuller and happier life.

Absolutely.

I've had some crappy times over the past 8 years, and been through things which nobody should ever have to, I guess.

I wouldn't say they have made me a better person, but I'm definitely made of tougher stuff than I ever thought I was. When the bigs thing happen to you, you suddenly realise how insignificant the little everyday troubles are, and life takes on a whole new perspective.

It depends how we internalize the event. Some experiences can damage us irrevocably if we are traumatized beyond reason making us more vulnerable.

As a general rule though, adversity does make us stronger and more emotionally whole.
