Because stereotypically they are effeminate. A fairy typically has girly associations. I've noticed that the term gets used by insecure tries-too-hard-to-be-manly type guys.

I believe it comes from the term Fey, meaning strange or different which was also used to describe the fairy-folk....
Homosexuals were seen as strange and different....

It's a case where one meaning bleeds over and brings a word with it.

I think that this perojoritive came from the common misconception that among other amzing talents, gay people (appearently only men) could take off in flight at any desired time, without the aid of hydrolics or fuel.

I believe the term is British in origin.

I am taking a wild guess on this - There is a stereotype of very effeminate males and their mannerisms "flitting" about, sort of like the faries in children's stories.

I haven't heard that term used in years.

b/c fairies are usually thought of being tinker-bell like. they're little in size, weak in most ways, and feminine. i've noticed most overtly 'macho-dudes' usually use the term publicly, but privately they use other 'names'. altho 'little' is commonly included right after the term 'dirty' and just before some other name. lol!!
