I didn't ask if you think it is or isn't a choice. I ask why does it matter.

Exactly. It is what it is.

I think it does.

People use the idea of choice to imply it's a moral choice.

But LGBT people know there is no choice, they just are, you cannot attach a moral definer to something that is not chosen.

I can choose to lie, cheat or steal. I can also choose to give to charity, help the homeless and pay my taxes on time. Those choices are then seen as moral choices, moral definers. If I do the first set of 3 choices, I'm bad, if I do the latter 3 I'm good, if I do a mix, I'm untrustworthy.

The choices we make define character.

So, by it not being a choice, there is no moral connotation, it just becomes a trait, and a trait cannot be positive or negative, it just is, like eye colour, not good nor bad, just is. We try to add moral definers to traits, but that just creates superstitions, nothing more.

So that's why it matters. You can ask people to respect your choice, but they still define it with morals.

However if it's not a choice as we all know, there is no moral. Then the moral decision comes from being yourself, which takes courage, so then it becomes a good thing that you're doing in being yourself, because it takes guts.

So it does matter. Choice should be respected I agree, but choices are based on morals, and reflect those. If we argue it's a choice, others can argue it's a bad one, and that we have poor morals.

Why does it matter if it is or isn't a choice?

Because if it was a choice (as the moralists and religious types love to believe) then we could just one day say "I am going to be straight and have sex with girls".

Since it is NOT a choice we can't do that.

In my opinion it isn't a choice. I am straight and I know I couldn't just choose to want to be a lesbian. It doesn't really matter whether it's a choice or not though, it is what it is. People should be able to live the way they want to live as long as they are happy.

yes it matters. If people could all understand that all sexual preferences are a choice made from influences, often choices made innocently while very young and they even forget making the choice or what that influence was.

Many gay children come to believe they was born gay and then think God made them that way. This is blaming God, and that is sin in itself. Often if a person can understand it was a choice, they may have more strength for change. As long as the confusion remains, so will many children be confused.

No one seems to know. I think it is different for each individual. Some may have alot of female/male hormone. Some may be fed up with the opposite sex. Some may have found acceptance as a male/female. Some may just want to experience something different.
It matters if it's a choice or not because if they have no choice no one can blame them or change them for being gay.

It shouldn't matter, but for some reason it does. People won't accept anything unless they can pick it apart piece by piece and see what makes it tick. If they can't pick it apart , then they don't want it. If they can't change it into what they want it to be then they don't want it. If it isn't what they think it should be then they don't want it. Gay people are just one of millions of things to be picked apart.

if it's not a choice, religion cannot deem it a sin, lest being born is a sin.

seeing as god made us the way we are, the only way they can continue to discriminate against gays is by taking the stance that we're all evil and chose to be this way.

I don't think given the choice people would decide to be gay.
