The answer depends on which hemisphere you are in. In the Northern Hemisphere, the days start getting longer after the winter solstice which occurs on December 22. The days keep getting longer until the summer solstice on June 21. After that they start shortening again. The exact opposite occurs in the Southern Hemisphere.

In the northern hemisphere, hours of daylight get longer every day from the winder solstice -- c Dec 21, with the shortest daylight of the year -- until the summer solstice -- c Jun 21, the longest daylight of the year. After June 21 daylilght starts getting shorter again until Dec 21.
Days themselves are all 24 hours long -- it is daylight that varies.

It depends on which hemisphere and time is relative. Our summer solstice in the northern hemisphere which would be the start of winter in the Southern hemisphere OR reverse that for the Southern hemisphere.

Days do not get longer, only the amount of daylight in a day changes.
Days are always 24 hours.
