Thats a tough question - I believe that there should be no smoking in places that serve food - as not everyone smokes -
I am a non smoker - but have been around smokers my entire life so if I am going to get some smoking related illness its too late for me - But I do not believe that a smoking ban is the answer -
But to make a total ban of smoking in places that smoking is usually accepted such as pubs & clubs & bingo places, in your car and or home is totally irrational.
The government wont ban Smoking completely by making it illegal to smoke because of the revenue -
They really havn't thought this through rationally - because if they did they would also ban all Alcohol and Spirits - and they cause just as many if not MORE health issues than smoking including deaths because some moron got in a car after drinking and hit some innocent person ...
Besides smoking is a choice - if a non smoker wants to go into a pub then he or she knows that there will be smoke in there and it was their choice to go in - if a business has a smoking part and a non smoking part well then if a non smoker sits close or comes into the smoking area that is also their choice.
With the air quality as it is from vehicle emissions why complain about smoke when vehicle emissions will kill ya faster -
But as I said before in a place where food is served (other than a pub - which should have seperate dining facilities away from the main drinking area) there should be no smoking -
Businesses such as pubs are losing money especially in England, Scotland and Ireland because the weather is not always great - people have to go out and smoke in the cold and rain - why because of a ban - the cold and rain = extra health issues ...
The options they have given smokers to help with quitting are very limited - mostly to other addictive devises - such as patches, anti depressents etc. many of the items you can buy over the counter have bad side effects and some people have severe allergic reactions to them.
If they are going to ban smoking go the full way - BAN IT COMPLETELY and offer rehap like they do for someone who is addicted to heroine or cocaine or anyother addictive drug
But if they want to ban it they should first Ban DRINKING its just as bad and causes about the same if not more deaths in other ways - think about it you might agree -
so my answer to a ban of smoking is no

Nay. Everyone has a choice to either smoke or not. They should also have a choice of whether they want to be around smokers or not. Therefore if someone doesn't like being in a club or pub that allows smokers they should choose not to be there. Yes, I smoke, I don't smoke in front of children. I never smoke in someones home unless I ask if I can or if I need to go outside. I worked in a club before the smoke ban and I didn't smoke back then, I chose to work there and be around my smoking pals. They should have places that are smoke free and those that allow smoking. It's all about choice, if people don't like it then go somewhere else!!

No.
There are non-smoking pubs - and there could be more - except there is no demand for them, and most of them have gone to the wall.
Ireland led the fad for non-smoking pubs - and closed 200 pubs in a week.
I was a smoker, and now a non-smoker. I appreciate both sides of the arguement.
Picture this. 5/6 friends going out for a drink. 3 smoke. Are you going to a pub that allows smoking, or a non-smoker?
The Nanny State has decided that non-smokers haven't got the brains to decide for themselves whether they will go to a non-smoking pub or a smoking pub, so they ban smoking in all pubs. Pathetic thinking, and no answer.
One of the questions NOT asked in the smoke/no smoke survey was 'Do you ever use your local pub'
Since time immemorial, it has been a man's pleasure to take a stroll down to his local pub, put his feet up by the fire, and enjoy a pipe.
Large breweries are killing the British pub by turning them into restaurants. The government is putting the final nail in the coffin.
Where will non-smokers go for social intercourse with his neighbours when the British pub is dead?

I am against the smoking ban for several reasons. I think that business owners should have a right to choose if they wish to allow smoking in their establishment as long as there is a sign stating that smoking is permitted. If people don't like that then they have the choice not to shop, eat or hang out there. It is as simple as that. If I don't like the policy's of an establishment then I just don't go there. I see that everyone is complaining about their health and the smell. Yes cigarettes stink (and yes I do smoke) but what about people who wear too much perfume? I get real bad allergies from it, so should people be banned from wearing it? What about alcohol? People get behind the wheel drunk everyday hurting and killing others, so should we ban alcohol too? What about young children who go to restaurants, movie theaters, and shops with their parents who scream and run wild? Personally they give me a headache and anxiety attacks not to mention the dangers of someone tripping over them. So should we ban them from going out in public places? My point is that if we ban one thing that is a health risk we should ban them all.

Absolutely Yay!!! I love going out for an evening and not coming home stinking of cigarettes, taking my children for lunch and not having to breathe in someone elses smoke, walking through the shopping centres without having to try and find a spot which is not clogged up with smokers. I could go on and on - what a great decision to ban it!! But my delight is only the tip of the iceberg compared to those who work in service industries, etc and who had to tolerate this for years - 2nd hand smoke is just not nice.

re: the smoking ban all that's gonna happen is all the smokers are gonna be forced outside to smoke and will complain.
Non smokers won't find beer gardens or the outdside areas of pubs as enjoyable because of all the smoke (even with wind the smoke stays in the area) so they'll complain about being stuck inside bars / pubs on nice sunny days / how smokey it is outside.
No one is gonna be happy, especially when cigarette sales go down and the government have to find another way of getting money (ie increasing tax) to pay for things like, war, there wages, and probably more war.

I think it's not before time England followed suit with the clearly more intelligent neighbours.
Smokers. Yep, you've got a right to smoke. No one's stopping you smoking.
I don't smoke. I've got a right to go to the pub and not have to inhale smoke.
I would wonder why you think your right to smoke over-rides my right not to inhale smoke?
To be honest, though, I don't care what anyone in England thinks. Most people in Scotland think it's perfectly good, and I'm one of them.

Yay for me. I quit smoking about three months ago, it took me about a month to realise how bad it actually smells, nowadays, if someone lights up near me now, it makes me feel sick so the smoking ban is a definite yay for me.

I find that i definitely do smoke less when im out which can only be a good thing! its just a way of life now - bit weird at first but you'll get used to it.
There is a down side - the smell of smoke hid the bad smell of sweaty men eh!!
