Okay, here's the deal. My wife has a desktop in our second bedroom. when we bought a wireless laptop, I hooked the router up to the desktop and installed the software, made the router secure, then established a connection from the laptop to the router. Th router has worked like a charm.
But now we want to get rip of the desktop, its old and dying. Currently, the cable line enters my home and connects to my modem, then another cable goes from my modem to the PC CPU, then the last cable goes from the PC CPU to the router.

My question is can I remove the PC CPU from this loop? Cant I just have the cable coming into my home to the modem, then a cable going from the modem to the router and that's it? Will I need to intall the router software on my laptop?

Normally the setup should be Modem to Router Router to all computers. So removing any computer shouldn't be an issue at all unless you are using a modem with a USB connection. If it has eithernet (most cable modems do) just go from the modem to the routers (intenet/wan) input port and you should be good to go. If it only has USB you will need a USB router.

There should be no need for any software to run the router.. most can be accessed from a web browser which is already installed.

with out knowing the model it's a bit hard so here go's phone line modem router pc on the back of the router should be 4 x RJ45's or 5 the fifth is a up link and you use a cross over cable from the modem to the router in it or a patch cable in one of the other 4 then a patch cable to the pc in one of the others it don't mater just not the up link the software is only to set up the router but you should have it anyway the pc only go;s between the modem and the router for the pc to work as a network gateway most router have a firewall in them to protect the pc from hacker's

you can configure your router to mantain the connection and the modem
you do not need to install the software on your laptop but you will need the key or passphrase thst you used to make your network secure

you have answered your own question, that is exactly how you do it and is normally the standard setup, not sure why you would have it the way you do but once you plug you rearange your setup nothing will change and should work as normal
