Julius Caesar. Ancient history is sketchy at best. Historians of that age had biases that came out in their writings, plus many of the so-called histories were just stories handed down through generations. Caesar was a man of special talent and intelligence and I would really have liked to know what he was really like.

Union General Don Carlos Buell (1818 - 1898) - he wrote about his experiences in the American Civil War, but he never, like many leading historical figures at the time (Ulysses S. Grant, William T. Sherman, and Philip Sheridan) wrote his own memoirs.
