Yeah, all banks do that. It's not criminal, it's clearly posted on the ATMs that you will get charged for using the ATM if you don't have an account, and then your bank will also fee you. We're not out to rip you off. You agreed to this when you singed up for the account and the ATM/Debit Card. It's also not a punishment, you are paying for a service. To make it convenient, we allow you to use foreign ATMs for a small service fee, we don't have to. There are plenty of banks where you can only use their machines.

Find out what the bank charges are, then find out what the commission for exchanging the money. then work out which deal you would save on.
If i was you i would only take my ATM card this way you are safe and so is your money. Once the money is withdrawn you have no insurance.
Hope you like UK the weather is a bit rubbish at the moment.

Use the ATM. Don't carry cash.
The additional benefit is that when you use an ATM to withdraw foreign currency you will get the inter-bank rate. Much better than you would at a local bank.

Use your ATM card over there when In need of money, so you wont loose your money from the bank on the way there.

if you use your ATM to pay for stuff, its def better as they tend to give you the best exchange rate(when they convert it in your account) and like the other users have said, it will keep you from having to worry about getting robbed. Plus with how much "change" British money seems to have it gets annoying to carry around that much metal money in your pocket/purse.

Just bring enough cash to get anyting you may need when you get here so you have money for a bus or taxi if you need it and then withdraw while you are here. Some parts of the UK have quite bad pickpocketing and muggings so be careful! personally I never carry much cash, just get money out of the cashpoint whenever I need it, and I live here!

If it's VISA, you're probably better off just using the card.
