I actually have a list that I try to read from...its the best fiction of the last century, and let me tell you, some of the selections are horrid! I have to give myself a break sometimes, though, and read whatever book is "hot" at the time or whatever book passed me by while I was reading a "classic". When Kurt Vonnegut passed away, I went back and reread Slaughterhouse 5 and loved it. Sometimes a friend will say "You have to read this." and more times than not, they're right. What about you?

I like to find books I haven't read yet by the authors I really enjoy. I also read the backs of books and sometimes I read a book because it was mentioned in a book I've read or a clip of the book was in the baxk of a book I'd just read. I also figure out what book to read by making lists or just picking a random book and reading it.

I usually pick an author I like best and get a list of all their works then I read all of them that i can find. When I don't have a particular author, I read what is popular or suggested by someone. Or sometimes I really do judge a book by its cover and pick one that looks interesting without reading what it is about, who wrote it, or even looking at the title.

I tend to consider multiple factors, for starters, the author, if it's from an author I have already read and enjoy the previous book it's a definite plus, the title and what the back cover preview of the books say are good guidelines to know if it's the kind of book you'd enjoy.

-what my book club is reading [Little Children]
-what this other book club I don't really ever get to the meetings for is reading, or has read [Frankenstein]
-what people I know (mostly my on-line friends) mention [The Old Man in the Sea, The Memory Keeper's Daughter]
-what my husband has read [A Long Way Down]
-what's available at the library that I've heard of or looks good [again Memory-Keeper's Daughter]
-what I'm interested in theme-wise (for example because other books I've read or places I've been or what's going on in my life or the world suggest a theme) [Madame Bovary, parenting books]
-sometimes my English students read a book, so I have to read it too [Night]

well, sometimes i will make a list(@ school, we have these thinngs called accelerated reader(AR), and only certain books qualify for AR, and i'll go through the list of AR books, and choose titlews that look interesting.).
Other times, say im reading Romance, and i just finished, and the total hunk just commited suicide. SO i'll think, "WOw. I'
m into the horror mood now, and their easy to read, why not read a couple?".
Sometimes, if i am @ home, i'll look @ my bookshelf, and try to find a completley childish, very short, or sometype of 'quick read' i can finish quickly.
Or, like right now, i get very interested in one particular author. Christopher Paolini(Eragon,Eldest), Stephen King(if you havent heard of him, ur nutz), Jo Rowling (...), Anthony Horowitz(alex the teen spy, the gatekeepers0, ect. and, of course, i;ll want to find bokks that these writers wrote, and read them (im currently reading Stephen King's Thinner).
And, sometimes, many times, few times, i'll be in a fog, not know what book to read, be very mad, and not read for three to five days. well, acctually, hours.
Or, i'll go by my mood. Mythilogical: centaurs, dragons, satyrs. Romance: hunks, hotties, love. Horror: gore, bloodshed, fear. Fantasy: super powers, fairies, talking animals. Mysteries: clues, suprise, shock.

I peruse the bookstore (which can sometimes take an hour!) to see if anything jumps at me. I tend to stay away from the sci-fi, romance and non-fiction sections. I like classic literature. Sometimes, I like to stick to a "favorite" author and I'll read all of his books before moving on.

It is often a leap in the dark when you decide to pick up a book by an unknown author. But unknown authors need readers and feedback from them, so give a chance to an unknown author. Chances are you would add him or her to your list of favourites. I know of one such author but I do not know if I am allowed to mention her name or her book.

I go to the library and look around.
My first stop there is at the "new books section".
I ALWAYS look at (read) the first page, if I like that page, I generally like the book.
