Politicians know that everything they say is going to be dissected...just as we are doing now. Therefore everything is said for a reason and with a meaning behind it. In saying he is humbled, he is trying to build an image of himself that will appeal to the people. Someone they can relate to, as after Tony Blair they want to be heard, so he is trying to show his sensitive side.

Gordon Brown has never been elected by the public or the party to the office of Chancellor - a job I reckon he did well.
His first real test within the Labour Party was when he stood for Prime Minister, when he received an overwhelming majority of the votes.
So I believe him when he says he felt humbled.
Time will tell - like Blair - how long he feels humbled.
But give the man a chance.......

Interesting question.
Either, just possibly, he means that he feels slightly abashed at the expectations placed on him by all these supporters. Or I suppose sometimes getting a lot of public support could make you feel good enough about yourself to momentarily let your defences down which he could mistake for humility. Or it's bullshit.

Remember Uriah Heap in Charles Dickens book?. Brown is 'humble' in exactly the same way.

You missed it - he actually said he had been 'rumbled' - found out - caught in the act - of being a total nonce that wants to tax Britain out of every last penny they earn.
The ship will sink - with him at the helm - thankfully

I think he's trying hard not to look arrogant. I Expect him to be quite different compared to Tony Blair because he's making it clear that he wants to listen. Tony Blair was a leader, not a listener.
