Advertise in telephone book [it used to be prohibited but now everybody does it.]

Engage in some "networking." Join the Chamber of Commerce and attend all chamber functions. Join a local service club like the Lions, Rotary, or Kiwanis club. Join the Masons and/or the Knights of Columbus. Visit all of the Justices of the Peace [District Magistrates] to let them know that I am in business. Introduce myself to local Realtors and title companies. [My logic is that I want to get my name out to the public as a lawyer. People are likely to hire you if they know that you are a member of their church, their service club, lodge, etc.]

Visit the trust departments of local banks to let them know that I am available to write wills and trust agreements for their clients.

Contact the Court Administrator to let him know that I am available to take court-appointed criminal assignments. Also, be present when criminal court hearings are taking place. Sometimes the judge will assign attorneys present to represent accused felons.

Attend meetings of the local school district. I know that the district has its own solicitor, but I just want to become known in the community.

Make myself available as a speaker to various groups, including churches, on topics such as: "Why You Need A Will," "Consumer Protection Topics," and the like.

Oh, yes, some older attorneys will often refer to you clients that they do not want to handle because they feel that they can't make enough money. Also, sometimes you may be asked to represent somebody in a "conflicts" situation.

Network with other attorneys, your local bar association or committes on which you have an interest.

Seek court appointments for criminal, probate or guardianship cases. Make friends with the court clerks. They are a wealth of knowledge.
