I am looking after a duck but have run out of his food. I only have him for another day. nowhere in the area I live does anyone sell duck food, the closest thing I have found is hen laying mix in a 10 kg bag. My duck is at the stage where he has lost most of his baby down and has feathers everywhere execpt his head and wings. I am thinking of feeding dry dog food, parsley, celery, grass, rolled oats, slugs ect from the garden, weet bix cereal and mabye fish food? are any of these things dangerous? I have heard too much protein causes deformed feathers. also does anyone know how much he should weigh? he is a mallard cross.

When the duck has main feathers, you could give him fish but actually cut it in smaller pieces. It can be raw fish like sardines. My mum used to breed the ducks in our house, she'll let them loose in the yard. Always have a large bowl of water as ducks need water around them. They can be in an enclosure during the night time and wander around during the day. By the time they're adult, it will be safe from cats in the neighbourhood. If the duck is still small, they can live on chicken feed but throw in some greens.

Just for a day, eating a bit of small-kibble dog food won't hurt him a bit. If he gets some fresh grass clippings and such too, he will probably enjoy it immensely. A little bread will be a treat as well.

DO NOT feed him bread, it causes diarrhea. Give him greens, lettuce, broccoli, clovers etc. cracked corn, mushed up duck pellets etc. Small amounts of protein are alright, but too much does cause poor development.

My ducks, Robin and Dani, eat chicken food, just like my chickens Margot and Bianca. They'll be fine until you can get them some duck food.

Yea, One day will not make a difference. I wouldnt go too far off the diet you had before to subsitute things because even that can make a difference in his bathroom habits
