So my fiance tries to sneak people food to our dogs and I always tell him not to. Do you have any good reasons I should tell him to make him stop or is a little people food not bad for our doggies? Btw, one is 3 years old Jack Russell/ Chi mix about 9lbs. The other is 6 months Black Lab/Jack Russell Mix about 20 lbs, I'm more concerned about her because he doesn't usually feed the smaller one since she's mine. I just think she should get good food since she's still a pup and needs a good diet! Am I being over cautious? Thanks!

Also, usually it's like meats that he feeds her.

I give her tons of chew toys and bones though. What I was thinking...is that, people don't usually eat the most healthy foods and if it's not that healthy for us, won't it be that much more unhealthy for the dogs since they are much smaller? I don't know...any other answers?! :)

People foods that aren't fried, heavily spiced, processed or salted, don't contain onions, grapes, raisins, chocolate are ok for a dog.
Some great choices:
chicken, turkey, beef, pork (yes pork is fine as long as it isn't chinese pork or ham and done in moderation), sweet potato, squash, pumpkin, watermelon, cereals such as cheerios or kix, cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, carrots, green beans, tomato, rice cakes, slices of hot dog, heart, gizzard, liver

Yes, my dogs get people food.

I make a lot of food for my dogs.

I eat healthy, and my dogs often get what I get. Predominately meat, sometimes they get fruits or veggies. Well my little dog does, my big one will only take meat.

Make sure the dog is fed ONLY after you are done.

My dogs get to lick the plates before they go into the dishwasher as well. They do a great job at being the "rinse cycle".

People food, good people food, is better for dogs than most dog food. Ever read the ingredients on most bags? EEK!

My dogs won't get kraft dinner or candy or jello or cake, but they get the bones out of a steak, the "fatty" parts I won't eat or raw veggies. They get cheese and yogurt. They get homemade soup.

Dogs are ominvores like us, and until the past what, 100 years they were mostly living off raw stuff and human scraps. Healthy scrapes aren't going ot kill them.

People food is better for the dog. Dog food is not subject to inspection or oversight at this time. In fact, most of the meat in dogfood is what was rejected as use for humans. Ever seen those huge grease containers behind fast food restaurants? When they change their fryers the old grease goes into them and is sold to be put into pet foods. It's just gross. If a pig is brought to a plant with pseudo rabies or rhinitis or any other disease that makes it unfit for humans the pet food companies pick it up for use in feed. Same thing happens with sub-standard grain.

Marketing of petfood is big business. But when people really think about where the pet food ingredients come from, it's just nasty. Don't fall for every commercial you see. Read ingredients and research the truth.

When I do a full on roast dinner, we also do extra for the dogs. They have a nice mix of meat, veg and gravy normally once a week.

As someone has already said, chocolate must never be given to dogs as it will kill them, but most other things are fine.

When ours were puppies, they benifited from the different tastes and textures that human food gave to them. We were just careful not to over do it because of weight gain.

Our one dog stole and ate a whole chicken curry once, we sat back and waited for the explosion! The only ill effect that she had was an orange nose from the colour of the curry!

What do you think "doggies" eat in the wild? Dog biscuits? Cans of Pedigree? Let's see ... it would be meat, wouldn't it?! All kinds of "real" food are absolutely great for dogs, in fact far better than the crap from the dog section in supermarkets. Raw meat .. cooked meat ... pasta, rice, vegetables ... whatever your dog likes, as long as you don't give it cooked bones, processed muck or the stuff that's poisonous to them like grapes or chocolate.

My dog eats all the good stuff above and is deliriously happy and healthy. I look in the supermarket for beef, lamb, chicken and pork that's on special or marked down due to its sell-by date. Most butchers will also give you off-cuts and bones, chicken carcasses (raw, obviously) etc.

I would say the tiniest bits of some human food is ok, but it is often very difficult for all members of a family to coordinate how much each person is giving. So maybe you should have really healthy treats available so everyone gives the right treat. You could put a little cookie jar or bowl of healthy treats in a handy place for all to see.
There is a lot of good info on this website if you click around. Lots of good advice for diet.

Hey I don't think people food would hurt the dog but please don't give him choclate food because it is bad for animals. we have 3 cats and they like pretty much anything. now black and white cat isn't into people food much . Except they all like for me to open a can of tuna. our little calico cat like yogurt. so see there it is alright as long as you watch what you give them.

i have two labs. my dogs eat anything and everything and are in superior health. my dog even eats chocolate (in moderation, but once ate a whole bag of hershey kisses and even figured out how to take the wrappers off) and candy and sugary stuff.

but then again, i don't see my dogs as dogs.. they are my family and are treated with a special kindness.
