The purpose of the Civil war was to end the dispute regarding slavery wherein states had conflicting stands causing the war to escalate. The triumph of Union Army abolished slavery.

A civil war is nothing but a war between people of the same country.
It might be because a certain faction of the country strongly believes in one set of principles and the other doesnt. Hence when words fail it turns to weapons and killing.

In the American Civil war the union lead by Lincoln opposed the secession of the Southern states(secession means withdrawal from an organisation,in this case The union),this was because the southern sates wanted to continue enforcing slavery and the Union abhored it , hence the war between the bothers.

American civil war? Do you mean that little skirmish we had back in the 1800's or the BIG civil war going on in the USA today? The "little" civil war we had in the 1800's was about state rights. The civil war we are engaged in with the democratic republican party is about "individual" rights. In both cases the "purpose" was/is to attain freedom & the pursuit of happiness for the public at large. Alway's some "lunes" that want to control others you know, so we gotta fight back. Hope this helped!
