The truth; tell him you've gone out too much, you're sorry and you won't do it again. Then don't do it again. Excuses are lame.

generally honnesty is the best way to go.
Sir/Mam I'm sorry, you know this isn't like me I've just been having such a hectic week things are getting out of hand. I assure you I'll take this weekend to get things in order and I'll be back to my regular routine when I get back on monday (tuesday in canada)
If as you say you are known for being a punctual individual your boss will totally understand that everybody has issues come up every now and then. Even bosses are people after all.
comeing up with excuses is generally a bad idea, if you say your cat died, and never had a cat in your life you could easily get caught in that lie a few days later with a question as simple as "so what was your cat's name ? " you'll ofcourse say, I don't have a cat. out of instinct and then they'll nail you.
Honnesty = good thing

Travelling difficulties tend to be the best. Frighteningly I have calculated that I've wasted over 2 months of my life to date allowing extra time for those appointments to which I can't afford to be late. Being a witness to an accident and having to wait on the police works for most forms of transport. I've always lived in a cul-de-sac and you'd be surprised how many garbage trucks, delivery lorries, street-light repairers, drain unblockers and yellow-line painters have all been prevented me from leaving by car.

You could say you burned the cabbage last night and the odour made you ill.
Alternately, I would aplogise, be glad I hadn't been given the sack, and probably make excuses to those who want to keep me out too late. Better than attempting to keep one's boss out of one's, er...posterior.

After 3 days? And your a poor worker? I'd say the best excuse is because you have been fired.

Otherwise go get a dr. note for whatever is hurting you at the moment. I.E. Back, gout, ect...

You can try the truth; you'd rather be partying than working.
Part of being an adult is accepting responsibility for ourselves. Work may not be fun, but is necessary to pay the bills.

I usually just walk in and act like I was on time.

Maybe you can make up for it by doing something really great or staying late a few times.

Hello Boss - Hello all of you, I debated with myself on the advantages of turning up this morning and the only thing in its favour was to look at your mournful faces and be thankful I don't own one of them, Smile you buggers, smile...
