Well banning religion would only move it underground. I think the best course would be to drop the emphasis on the evils of organized religion and instead look to stamp out the ignorance and other factors that lead to religion in the first place.

Well, rape and murder, etc have always been human based actions. Yes people can use Religion as a front to murder and gain power over the general masses, or even for any other reason too. And yes there are fanatics who will abuse their "religion" to aspire to (ultimately) personal gain.

Because Religion is all about the belief. The belief that there is something more in this world, the belief that we are not alone in some sense, the belief that if we act in a certain way then we will be rewarded in the end. Along the same lines, you could argue that we should get rid of politics, peer groups, friends and family. In fact, according to your question we should dispose of everything we know and have ever believed in and kill ourselves to stop the root of the problem.

The thing is Religion provides a belief system that people need, that many people lack. Religion can provide the belief structure people miss out on or that they don't have normally. Though have you ever heard anyone argue that people believe only what suits them (not what they like, but what suits them)? 'Tis true, if you boil it all down, then it really is true. Religion is also one of those things that to many people "suits" their beliefs and their experiences in some way. In order to get rid of religion you'd have to get rid of all beliefs in every way, shape and form. It just isn't going to happen.

Religion or "religio" -- reconnecting to divinity or Spirit is a belief. Some sects produce fanatics ; people who demand you believe what they do as fervently as they do, and will use force to accomplish make you. They are very few in number, and aren't the great majority in any religion, sect or creed. Most of their effectiveness is due to collusion with government - the church and state. Government has the power to force people to not/do things, and most of the crimes against heretics or witches was and is done by the same institutions you want to use to ban religion altogether.

Religions are popular because they fill a human need. They offer hope to people who are sick, starving and poor and in need of a miracle. People are able to stand the suffering in this world if they believe that after death they will be rewarded.
Soviet Russia was supposedly an atheist state, but millions met their death from Stalin. I think rape, murder and genocides are human in origin and people use religion as an excuse to justify their actions. Usually their real motivation is greed--for money, land or power.

They have been banned or restricted in some countries:
In the past USSR (Russia)
China

To enforce control over religion in China, hundreds of thousands of people are tortured and executed each year. To achieve what? There are no, and never were any, extremist religious groups in China.

Look like atheists are trying to compete with the religious to see who can kill the most.
