Mom has pneumatosis cystoides coli (air in the bowels) and was wondering if there is a way to get rid of it without surgery?

Pneumatosis cystoides coli is not treated with surgery. Are you sure you heard right? Now a gastro-intestinal endoscopy might be done but that is a diagnostic procedure and not really classified as surgery. During that procedure a biopsy can be performed but this is not a way to get rid of pneumatosis cystoides coli...it is a diagnostic tool.

Usually no treatment is required. If symptoms are severe enough to warrant action, then oxygen therapy is used. Also antibiotics and/or a special diet might be ordered.

Surgery is only used to treat complications. Did your mom develop a complication? If so, the surgery will fix the complication but not the pneumatosis cystoides coli. For more information:
