want to make sure whatever version I get it is good for a while and will not need to be scrapped if I go to Vista. I am guessing that 2007 is the latest version.

I am using Office 2007. And it is better than Office XP(2003) a lot of thing has been changed in looking and it is very easy to use.

First of all you shouldnt get Vista yet i'd wait till the end of the year to get it. Alson MS office 2003 is the best one to use. Everyone I know uses XP and Office 2003 so I suggest that you stay with XP and 2003 for a while. Once you upgrade to Vista later in the year then think about getting Office 2007.

I would get Office 2007....I know its not the same, but when I swapped to Vista. some of my spreadsheets were not compatible with Vista and whilst they transferred OK some of the data was corrupted.....Office 2007 is great, especially Excel....Vista is a pain though...I would wait a few months for the bugs to be ironed out.

2007 is the latest Office pack, but why go to Vista if you are comfortable with XP? As far as I have heard, Vista is nowhere NEAR being free of bugs...

Just a thought...

I just bought a new laptop that came with Vista. While it is a pretty impressive OS in some aspects, it falls very short in the compatibility aspect. I've had to scour the net for all the new codecs I need to play media files and it has some peculiar hiccups with a lot of programs I regularly use, like Photoshop CS3 & Wacom software.

However, if you will just be using your computer for casual internet stuff and other basic functions, it should be fine. If you're a more involved computer geek (like me :)!), I would wait until they improve a lot of the glitches and companies have more time to upgrade their software.

XP pro I found to be the best so far.
it will be around for a long time to come

The Vista is still in trial and I would suggest to stay away from the Vista til they get all the bugs out..

I agree with Scrappy, if you're happily using XP at the moment why change to Vista? Personally, I'm continuing to use XP and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. I see no point in paying out for something unnecessarily . . .

Office XP is fine for now, and the file formats it uses will be safe for many years. If you are the one generating the files, it's fine.

However, if you are receiving or maintaining many files from Office 2007, you might need to upgrade soon to make it easier on yourself.

For the love of god don't get Vista, it has encountered so many problems you'd be dancing with fate. my advice is wait a good 6 months to a year so that they can have enough time to iron out the wrinkles.
