If you are close to your family, it means alot. They generally are looking out for your best interests and you know the saying-love is blind. If your partner does not treat your family with respect and at least politeness, what makes you think you will be treated any better? If it's just 1 person that has a problem they will just need to get over it or risk your disapproval. In the end, it's your decision, but remember, your family will always be your family and your current partner might not always be your partner.

In the end, it does not matter.
However, your family likely does not approve or like someone because they see something wrong with either the situation and/or person. Generally, they are just trying to look out for you and to be protective. Which is no different than getting your best friends approval either.
Consider that this concern may be about mre than you think it is on the surface. Many pople cannot see what they are too close to.

Depends on the family. If your family is close, like with regular family dinners, holiday/birthday celebrations, lots of interactions...and if you value this closeness, then if you want to remain a participant it will be helpful if your partner is accepted. On the other hand, if you're living in another city/state/country and only visit the family occasionally, not very important. Or, if the family is not that close. As to your immediate family, same general conditions apply. How close do you want to be with your family. The closer you want to be the more important it is for them to accept your partner.

If I had to like and approve of my daughter or sons partners, then they probably would never be in a relationship. Simply put my expectations are higher than theirs, but it is their lives and they have to live with the results, even when I warn them different. They make their own decisions weather I like it or not.

So in general I have to tolerate those decisions

i think its very important that your family approves and likes your partner because if they dont that starts to create problems between you and your family, which may make your partner feel uncomfortable to be in the relationship in fear of cause problems.

I would say it's pretty important., but If your family doesn't approve of him/her due to dumb things like: they don't make enough money, their car sucks, they're not good looking enough, etcc..etc..Then that's petty and you shouldn't care what they think. As long as you're happy and the person isn't a complete JERK, that's all that matters. And if your family values you and respects you, they will respect your relationship too.

Depends on how old you are. And if you are living with your parents.

If you are old enough, yes it is important...however you are the one that is going with the partner and that is your life.
In saying that, I mean no drugs, etc.
You will be the one to live with this person, should you decide to marry.

if it's casual, i dont care what they think. and they probably would not meet her anyway, since they live in a different town.

if it's serious, it would be nice if at least close family members, esp. my mom, liked her.
