my experience has been that kitties who have been weaned/taken from their mommies too soon, never quite get over their insecurity...it's kind of like sucking your thumb, or carrying a blankie around.
when your cat feels needy AND safe enough, he will knead...this is what tiny kittens do to help them get their mothers milk.... i have one cat who kneads with one paw whenever he drinks water even. it's ok behavior, it's called (among humans): self-soothing behavior.

She probably was taken from her mother too soon which is why she suckles but the kneading is a natural thing for cats to do regardless of their age ~ it just means they are content and happy to be with you. She may quit sucking her teat as she gets more secure with you so give her lots of love and if she makes her teat red and/orsore, you need to consult with your vet and see what they suggest to stop it. You might also work with her and when you see her sucking, tell her no ~ cats don't always catch on as quickly as dogs but if you are patient and keep working with her, she will learn to stop it.
The cat we had was 21 when he died last year and he still kneaded things and when he'd get in the bed with us or sit next to us on the couch, he wanted to be touching us so his paws always went on our arms or legs. It's their way of saying they are happy to be with you :)
Give the sweetie a hug for me ~ we hope to get another kitty, just not sure yet when that will be but we sure miss our baby. Thankfully we have two dogs to help fill some of the void.

My cat would not suck, yet after about 2 years of residing with me (individual stray who wanting to flow in), she all of sudden began kneading me. It takes position fairly after I placed on a particular fleecy dressing gown. She now and again has fairly a consultation at the same time as growing a member of me on the mattress to sleep. i imagine it truly is an illustration of affection and trust and punctiliously familiar. some cats by no potential do it, others do it plenty.

It is a habit, like some cats will suckle a blanket or their brothers and sisters. Everytime she does it just pull her head gently away from herself. My cat used to suckle blankets but with age eventually stopped.

I once had a cat that sucked cloth, Its a result of being taken from the momma to soon. Its sorta a form of kitty PTSD. If it bothers you to much and it gets to be too bad take her to the vet. if kitty starts sucking on cloth it can become a health issue. they can actualy becom choked on the fibers from clothing and die, and im guesing if your kitty continues its sucking its self it could result in a relly nasty fur ball and a bald spot that can become irritated. please call a vet and ask what can be done. good luck.

I have a cat who sucks her paw since I got her at 2 months. She never outgrew it and it doesn't harm her. When she does it she really purrs.
