Hi, I have an 8 month old russian blue kitten that I got from a rescue shelter. She has been doing very well until last night. She seems to be in a lethargic state, and prone to skittishness out of the blue, swiping at objects or stalking around the house, seemingly frightened of things not there. Almost like she is hallucinating. And her eyes are very dialated, and her breathing seems very quick and shallow. I really have no idea WHY she is acting this way! Please help me!

Is the skin on her back rolling? Does she "twitch"? Is she overly sensitive to being petted? If so, your kitty may have feline hyperesthesia. Afflicted cats will have "episodes" from time to time. Sometimes the episodes are triggered by stress; sometimes by allergies; sometimes due to an underlaying medical condition. My cat has a mild case of this malady - just the rolling skin and twitching and hallucinating (like he is seeing bugs). I don't give anything to treat my cat when he is having an episode. I just make sure that he is away from any stressful thing. I keep him in a quiet room. He is usually fine after 2 or 3 days. But then, his hyperesthesia is very very mild. I have heard that vets often treat hyperesthesia with clomipramine (Clomicalm Rx) or prednisone and fluoxetine (Prozac Rx). I lady I know who has a hyperesthetic cat treats the condition with regular drops of fish oil and periodic acupuncture. Other natural aids are Back flower essences and calming scents or liguids (like Feliway); CoEnzyme Q10; vit E - but you'll have to research these things.

At any rate, you should take your cat to the vet. Describe the behavior. It is the dilated pupils of your cat that concerns me. For now, see if your cat will respond positively to a cat calming aid like Feliway or RescueAid or any cat-calming product. While your kitty is this way, do not allow her to go outdoors. Keep her in a quiet room when she wants to sleep. When she wakes, distract her with play.

have you given her anything treated with cat nip?? Sometimes cat beds and toys are treated with it and young cats don't seem to handle it very well, If you do get it out of the house NOW. If not then get her to the vet asap! Good luck with you kitty

Your cat sounds very sick. You need to call your vet.

Many clinics have "Vet's on call," where the vet can tell you whats wrong and will see your cat if it's very ill. Call your vet; if you get a recording, it should have an emergency number.

If not, go to an animal hospital.

Definately sounds like poison. Get her to the vet now!! There's no time to waste. Do you clean with pine-sol? there's this stuff in it (ph.... something-or-other) that is VERY toxic to cats.
