The Path with Heart, by Jack Kornfield.
Kornfield shares Buddhist practices in a way that makes sense to the Western mind, but contains all the beauty and wisdom of the Eastern teachers.
His teachings on meditation are especially powerful. He acknowledges that it is difficult to calm the mind. He uses the analogy of training a puppy to sit. The dog doesn't sit right away, but with persistence and patience, success eventually comes.
I've read it many times. I highly recommend it. All the best.

The Holy Quran - if you can get a cd of the Quran being recited, even though you don't know Arabic, just listening to it will calm your mind and give you peace in your heart.

go to a buddhist temple, the moment you walk in there, you will realize how quiet it is from where you live to that temple. Once you step into the temple, your mind and body will be extremely calm.
