PROPHET MUHAMMAD (pbuh)
IN THE BIBLE

by

Dr. Zakir Naik

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in the Old Testament:

The Qur’an mentions in Surah Al-Araf chapter 7 verse 157:

"Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered Prophet, whom they find mentioned in their own (scriptures) in the law and the Gospel".

1.
MUHAMMAD (PBUH) PROPHESISED IN THE BOOK OF DEUTERONOMY:

Almighty God speaks to Moses in Book of Deuteronomy chapter 18 verse 18:

"I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and I will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him."

The Christians say that this prophecy refers to Jesus (pbuh) because Jesus (pbuh) was like Moses (pbuh). Moses (pbuh) was a Jew, as well as Jesus (pbuh) was a Jew. Moses (pbuh) was a Prophet and Jesus (pbuh) was also a Prophet.

If these two are the only criteria for this prophecy to be fulfilled, then all the Prophets of the Bible who came after
Moses (pbuh) such as Solomon, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Malachi, John the Baptist, etc. (pbut) will
fulfill this prophecy since all were Jews as well as prophets.

However, it is Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) who is like Moses (pbuh):

i)

Both had a father and a mother, while Jesus (pbuh) was born miraculously without any male intervention.

[Mathew 1:18 and Luke 1:35 and also Al-Qur'an 3:42-47]

ii)
Both were married and had children. Jesus (pbuh) according to the Bible did not marry nor had children.

iii)
Both died natural deaths. Jesus (pbuh) has been raised up alive. (4:157-158)

Muhammad (pbuh) is from among the brethren of Moses (pbuh). Arabs are brethren of Jews. Abraham (pbuh) had two sons: Ishmail and Isaac (pbut). The Arabs are the descendants of Ishmail (pbuh) and the Jews are the descendants of Isaac (pbuh).

Words in the mouth:

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was unlettered and whatever revelations he received from Almighty God he repeated them verbatim.

"I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him."

[Deuteronomy 18:18]

iv)
Both besides being Prophets were also kings i.e. they could inflict capital punishment. Jesus (pbuh) said, "My kingdom is not of this world." (John 18:36).

v)
Both were accepted as Prophets by their people in their lifetime but Jesus (pbuh) was rejected by his
people. John chapter 1 verse 11 states, "He came unto his own, but his own received him not."

iv)
Both brought new laws and new regulations for their people. Jesus (pbuh) according to the Bible did not bring any new laws. (Mathew 5:17-18).

2.
It is Mentioned in the book of Deuteronomy chapter 18:19

"And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not harken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him."

3.
Muhammad (pbuh) is prophesised in the book of Isaiah:

It is mentioned in the book of Isaiah chapter 29 verse 12:

"And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned."

When Archangel Gabrail commanded Muhammad (pbuh) by saying Iqra - "Read", he replied, "I am not learned".

4.
prophet Muhammad (pbuh) mentioned by name in the old testament:

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is mentioned by name in the Song of Solomon chapter 5 verse 16:

"Hikko Mamittakim we kullo Muhammadim Zehdoodeh wa Zehraee Bayna Jerusalem."

"His mouth is most sweet: yea, he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, and this is my friend, O daughters
of Jerusalem."

In the Hebrew language im is added for respect. Similarely im is added after the name of Prophet Muhammad
(pbuh) to make it Muhammadim. In English translation they have even translated the name of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) as "altogether lovely", but in the Old Testament in Hebrew, the name of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is yet present.

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in the New Testament:

Al-Qur'an Chapter 61 Verse 6:

"And remember, Jesus, the son of Mary, said, 'O Children of Israel! I am the messenger of Allah (sent) to you, confirming the Law (which came) before me and giving glad tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmed.' But when he came to them with clear signs, they said, 'This is evident sorcery!' "

All the prophecies mentioned in the Old Testament regarding Muhammad (pbuh) besides applying to the Jews also hold good for the Christians.

1.
John chapter 14 verse 16:
"And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever."

2.
Gospel of John chapter 15 verse 26:

"But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which
proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me."

3.
Gospel of John chapter 16 verse 7:

"Nevertheless I tell you the truth; it is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not
come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you".

"Ahmed" or "Muhammad" meaning "the one who praises" or "the praised one" is almost the translation of the
Greek word Periclytos. In the Gospel of John 14:16, 15:26, and 16:7. The word 'Comforter' is used in the English translation for the Greek word Paracletos which means advocate or a kind friend rather than a comforter.
Paracletos is the warped reading for Periclytos. Jesus (pbuh) actually prophesised Ahmed by name. Even the
Greek word Paraclete refers to the Prophet (pbuh) who is a mercy for all creatures.

Some Christians say that the Comforter mentioned in these prophecies refers to the Holy Sprit. They fail to realise
that the prophecy clearly says that only if Jesus (pbuh) departs will the Comforter come. The Bible states that the
Holy Spirit was already present on earth before and during the time of Jesus (pbuh), in the womb of Elizabeth, and again when Jesus (pbuh) was being baptised, etc. Hence this prophecy refers to none other than Prophet
Muhammad (pbuh).

4.
Gospel of John chapter 16 verse 12-14:

"I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth is
come, he will guide you unto all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me".

The Sprit of Truth, spoken about in this prophecy referes to none other than Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

NOTE: All quotations of the Bible are taken from the King James Version.

NO. The Quran does not complete the Christian bible. The Bible is complete and perfect, uncorrupted. Muslims accuse the bible of being filled with contradictions and has passed through human tamperings JUST because our beliefs doesn't match their beliefs. The Bible is the word of GOD, but the Quran is man-made, a book of poetry made by a criminal. A Christian CANNOT believe in Mohammed and at the same time, be a Christian. HE CAN NOT! Mohammed is the 'enemy' of Christians and Jews. Those who believe in Mohammed are just sick and trapped in that deadly cult - ISLAM. Mohammed cannot be the same as Jesus. Jesus is never an ordinary human, but Mohammed is, who created his 'virus' and died, and rot in his grave like anybody else, unlike Jesus, who rised to his Father.

The Muslims use the term PBUH here. What does it really mean?
This cryptic word is accepted by Muslims as an abbreviation for "peace be upon him." It is respectfully spoken of as well as written after repeating the name of Mohammed. Although it is alleged to be the rendering of an Arabic phrase, it is actually not a true translation - only half of it is. The Arabic phrase is Salla-llahu 'wassalam. It occurs in the Quranic text and literally reads, "Lo! Allah and His angels pray upon the prophet. Oh yea who believe, pray on him and salute him with peace."

One is utterly confounded when the literal and real translation is understood. Why do our Muslim friends hide the real meaning of pbuh? Is it because the Arabic statement is embarrassing since it contradicts Muslim doctrine?

How is Allah supposed to pray to the illiterate Muhammad and greet Him or anyone else for that matter? Does Allah pray? And if He does, to whom does he pray? Is this passage not contrary to Muslim theology, which teaches that Allah is prayed to but He never prays to anyone else?

Or does Allah really pray to other illiterate human beings or only to Muhammad, Allah's own prophet? The confusion of this popular Islamic expression leaves one perplexed and hanging in the air.

there are just too many misinterpretations of the Bible to comment on at this time, I would suggest that you take a closer look to the differences of Ishmail and Isaac from their birth to their fathers blessings. as to your question, I believe that Muhammad did exist, but I do not believe that he was a prophet. I believe the Bible is the Word of God and Jesus, whom most muslims say is a profit, made claims( which are justified) towards being God. those claims would either be insane, which wouldn't be fitting for a profit, or they are true, which would be fitting for God.

You have to be kidding, right? You try to justify an attempt to discredit Christians with a gross misinterpretation of scripture that even a child can see through?
You revere Jesus (Isa) as a mere prophet while the words of Mohammed carry greater weight in your reasoning. Then by your reasoning Jesus must be a liar because he said "No man comes to the Father but by me" and he warned against false prophets that would come after him. By the same reasoning you would put to death the infidel child who has not grown past his simple faith in that prophet. How is it that the Holy Spirit (by your reasoning Mohammed) comes to live in every Christian who deserves that fate?
Unbelievable.

I think perhaps Muhammed is mentioned in the Duet. text: "But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die" (Deu. 18:20). (As you said muhammed died)
Of course there is a way to determine who is true and who is false."And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?" (Deu. 18:21-22) "When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that [is] the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, [but] the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him. "
logically we could take this a step further and say that two true prophets can not contradict each other because God is not a liar.
In my humble opinion Christ was not just a prophet but a fullfiller of prophesey. Whom did the prophets phropsey of ...Christ. And we know this because He fullfilled those prophesies.
Also at the end of the NT Jesus warns: " For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and [from] the things which are written in this book." Rev. 22:18-19.
So if you are using the Bible to support Muhammed you'd have to take the Bible in its entirity. Muhammed, who came after this scripture was written, and added to and took away from it, is not scripturely supported.
The last test would be to analyze the differences in messages. if Christ and muhammed were both saying the same thing then I would say that muhammed was a true prophet of God. (If so, there would be no division among us today)
the truths of God can not be logically decphiered. Because God's ways are beyond our comphrehension. The ONLY way we understand truth is by revealtion from God.

May God bless us all in our search for truth so that in the end it is God who recieves all the glory and honor forever. Amen!

p.s. muhammed is not the spirit of truth, as you refered to in John 16:12. That is the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, Christ in spiritual form, that dwells among us even now. This prophesy was fullfilled on the day of Pentacost in Acts. Check it out.

Why does there have to be a choice? The prophet Muhammad's role in another faith is just as much open to the scrutiny of man misinterpreting events as any used to disprove that of Christianity. The question is where does God's word end and man's belief begin? It's man that always leaves an open ended debate when discussing faith. I do respect your research in this though. It is encouraging to know people are thinking out there, instead of quickly assuming others are right and never have any real insight.
In answer to your question (I think...kinda long) I don't have any problems with the Prophet Muhammad being referenced in scripture and I do still believe in it. To be honest, I haven't thought about, or know enough to comment. (yet) That's the problem with debating faith. Many people answer what they don't know (on both sides) out of being defensive. It ruins credibility and a faith is then labeled "wrong".
Good job, bro! Take care

heres a question for you, Bobby! why do muslims go out of their way to question others why they dont believe in something that you do? thats the beauty of this country, we are free to believe in what we want. it'sone of those things that we adapted into our constitution, we dont mix politics with religion. i think your man muhammad was just some guy that really liked getting attention from others and he blew smoke up the peoples asses that bent over for him. I didn't even read that long winded passage you so dutfilully labored over in the spare time that you dont spend praying to your all mighty leader. i believe in God and Jesus and they help me along in life just fine. furthermore i dont go around telling others that what they believe is foolish. Go blow yourself up dude. i hear the all mighty calling you forth to be a martyr in the eyes of all who say they love you. May God and his son Jesus Bless You. Live not in sin, be not judged by man, lick Muhamads balls til he blows his holy ghost all over your wretched soul. ( okay, i'll stop now. I'm making myself laugh)

You should read the Bible more and pray about it. And be willing to seek and find the truth.

The prophecy is about Jesus.

Start searching for the truth instead of what you want to find....

I enjoyed reading this piece. I'm agnostic and have been searching for answers regarding faith. I just finished reading the Holy Bible from front to back and am quite proud of myself. I would also like to read the true Koran. I'm not sure if women are allowed this honour? I don't want to upset the men. Mind you, I would like to get some answers about how the women are actually supposed to be treated in the Muslim religion. I think it's a shame that Muslims, Jews and Christians can't get along. But, that is human nature. Why can't we just all admit we love God, Allah, and as for the nitty gritty details, respect difference of opinions. As long as men, women and children are treated with reverence by all, there is no reason why we cannot reunite in brother/sister hood. Unfortunately this is a dream and will never be reality. God is good. Peace to Allah.

First of all, Mohammad was NOTHING like Moses. The history of Islam, written and compiled by those of the religion point out very clear distinctions. Moses saw God in a bush that to him appeared to be burning, but was not being consumed. Mohammad did not. By the hand of God, Moses and Aaron performed miracles before the Pharaoh, Mohammad did not. Moses led his people out of Egypt with the Pharaoh's blessings, at least initially, Mohammad led his people out by sneaking out, at night. Israel only did battle as God commanded, other wise they made an effort to live in peace with those around them. Mohammad led his people in constant blood shed.
There is NO credible linguist that would give the credit to Mohammad as the prophet to be raised up as you vainly attempt to assert. They do, however, point to John the Baptist. Moses only had 1 wife, Mohammad had 11, one of which, by Islam history, was a 9 y/o when she was taken. Mohammad attacked caravans led by traders that he had been one of, and had done business with before. Moses did not. Moses never had fits such that he looked like he was going mad, IE;crazy, when God spoke to him. Mohammad did, constantly. Moses never contradicted himself when he told the people what God had told him. Mohammad did, to the point that one of his scribes left him and became a Christian. No where does the Bible condone the use of force to make people convert to Christianity, of the Hebrew faith. Islam does it all of the time. So, you see, try as you might, Mohammad was never mentioned in the bible in any way. It is all a figment of your imagination, not unlike the visitations that Mohammad had. It is believed however, that what was meeting with Mohammad was actually a demon. His fits during those visitations would certainly fit, the fits.
