Today I found numerous amounts of fleas on my dogs stomach. He had a flea collar on. I took it off and gave him a flea bath. Should I put it back on him to protect him from getting more fleas? Does the bath prevent him from more fleas getting on him?

it's my experience that flea collars only work if the flea actually jumps on the collar, bites the collar and then dies from old age. dump the collar. since you just gave a bath wait at least 48 hours and go to your vet and get some frontline or advantage. this will give you 30 days of flea protection. a flea bath will only kill fleas on the dog during the bath but will not prevent more from getting on the dog right after the bath. the frontline and advantage work with the natural oils on the dog's skin, so this is why you should wait a few days for the natural oils to return before applying these products, but i have had results with frontline. i have yet to see a single flea on my 8 year old dog. good luck, again, dump the collar.

Flea collars are useless. They dont protect at All! ReallyThey barely protect the area that they cover around the neck. Flea shampoos only kill the fleas that are on your dog, they don't prevent more from coming on. Get some Frontline or Revolution. You may need to treat your home and/or yard for fleas, as well to make sure you rid your dog of fleas!

As other posters said, the collars are pretty much worthless. As far as the shampoo goes, it depends on the brand. Some are simply designed to kill existing fleas while others leave a residue thats supposed to help repel fleas for awhile.

As other have also said....I would get Advantage or something like that...even Bio Spot would be better then the collar (tho many say Bio Spot isn't nearly as effective as the perscription kind). If you go this route it's best to get the waterproof kind otherwise first day it rains & your pet goes outside goodbye protection.

Do NOT use flea collars or any other OTC flea product. They are worthless, a waste of money and can be very dangerous to dogs. They can cause neurological issues, seizures even death.
Go to teh vet and get a safe effective flea product such as Advantage or FrontlinePlus

I would recommend not using flea collars. I worked at a vet's office for a year and a half and only heard bad stories about the collars. I would recommend Frontline or Advantage. I hope it helps.

Use Frontline or Advantix. Flea collars can be TOXIC to your dog. It only protects your dog's neck. Fleas tend to hand out around the backend. Remember to treat the environment too, otherwise you will never rid yourself of fleas.

Consider getting some Advantage or Frontline from your vet clinic. That is more effective than a flea collar (which isn't very effective, in my opinion).

flea collars are not only not effective but the prolonged exposure of these chemicals is dangerous for your pet: our vet recommended a once a month topical treatment that you put between the shoulder blades of the dog, it comes in a tube and you just squeeze everything out of the tube and onto his shoulder blades once a month....usually comes in a three month supply and a three months supply of a good brand (such as advantage or frontline or one spot) will run you any where from $5-$15 depending on where you buy it and what brand you get; you can buy it at walmart, target, petco, petsmart, petland.........basically most pet stores and stores with pet aisles will have it; always remember to check the label to make sure you are getting the right kind for your dogs age and size
