Another user posted a question, and, while I'm not sure, it got me wondering.
But I truly don't want to tread on any toes...(we know there are lots of sensitive little piggies on both sides of the atheist vs Christian debate that rages on this forum daily.)
Anyway, the question was inspired by another user, who didn't put it very well (please forgive the understatement...call it sarcasm).
But it did make me wonder. Are most of the atheists in this forum homosexual? And, if you are, would that explain why you are so angry at Christians?
If you are an atheist, I would like to hear your thoughts on this issue. If you are an athesit, do you think most, or even a large percentage, of atheists in this forum are gay? Why or why not? If you do think so, do you think that might impact the way you or they relate to Christians? /Why or why not? If you don't think so, do you think there might be some other reason for the animosity? Why or why not?
Thanx in advance.!

Sweetheart, I am not in the least bit homosexual. However, I can understand those that are having anymosity towards a religion that automatically discounts them (their value, their life, and them as a person) due to their sexual preference.

I was a Christian for almost thirty years. During that time, I was in the church every time the doors were open. I was a women's minister as well as director of a church preschool.

I am no longer a Christian because I saw a truth which was greater than what I was being "fed".I mean no offense there, either.

There is more to life than an organized religion. The Christian version of right and wrong resonates within my mind as being inherently wrong in and of itself. I know you won't understand that on the inside looking out though, and that's fine. If it works for you, then it is a good thing in your life.

Most Atheists and Agnostics I know feel the same way. They do not try to force their beliefs upon others and are just happy when others have a faith or spirituality that benefits them. Christianity, as you well know, is not like that. It is a religion that says there is only one way and all those not utilizing that one way will go to eternal damnation. That's not very loving, or nice, in my opinion.

You were very kind in how you asked your question. I hope you find an answer that helps you. Mostly, just look at people as people. What does it matter to you what their sexual preference is? They are PEOPLE and they are all worthy of love, respect, and freedom from judgement.

Most people feel the need to believe in something. OK you are a believer now... Congrats what will you believe in sir? Most people pick something for one simple reason. It ends the questions. remember as a child when you used to ask Why, Why, But WHY? Well that benign question is amazing because, like the universe we live in, it has no answer. Even if you get an answer it only raises more questions. Both science and religion give the illusion of answering that question but if you look deep enough and are brave enough to face the void you will see beyond both. Simple answer is we are finite beings living in an infinite world. Let that sink in for a sec....... We will never ever, ever, ever, etc., find THE ANSWER. We all just cope by finding some paradigm that helps us cope and makes us feel a little warmer inside. What is amusing is how we bicker over something that is just as meaningless on either side. Human nature I guess. Well time to pick a side are you a Big-ender or a Little-ender? Now that we have that established, lets have a war.

P.S. I'm not gay.

NO. I am not gay, and I know a majority of the atheists on here are not gay. This is like the second time I have answered this question. Just because we hate the thing that puts down homosexuals doesn't mean we are in fact gay. I will defend gays until I die but I am not gay. There is animosity towards christianity when it comes to this topic because most atheists ACCEPT PEOPLE FOR WHO AND WHAT THEY ARE. I could care less if someone's gay hell you could be gay and I wouldn't care at all. There are other reasons for the animosity... maybe the fact that all of you tell us we're going to hell? Or that you are trying to turn this country into a theocracy? Or maybe because most of us were once a part of a religion and now hate religion with a passion? Pick one, there are more than just these too.

I,m not gay at all! But having said that, I'm not really a Christian or an Atheist! I just want to get at the truth of our existence! But I am continually hearing people who rant and rave for either side without really listening to logic! And that is! We do exist! and we exist in a world that is clearly designed! What I mean by that is, it has no religious significance intended! but we do have creatures who are designed to do significant tasks on this planet! We DO have birds that fly, right? we Do have fish that swim, right? Look! Lets put it another way! If some being or thing (Call him what you want!) got a great mass of earth, sand, rock or whatever! and hung it in space! In 500,000,000,000,000,000,000 billion years time you would still have a great mass hanging in space! nothing would happen! How could it? because there is no intelligence to start the ball rolling! As soon as just one thing is designed on this planet then you know there is intelligence! And we must all admit even the atheist that we do have wonders such as the brain! how about the eye? so complex it could never be replicated over and over again as it is in births is it was a random thing like turning a spade of earth over and everything falls into place like the last spade full! That is what the Atheists want us to believe! If every thing on this earth is random with no intelligent input, then why have we a 'contant' trait all the time that we can foresee! such as a woman has sex, right? but we know she will have a baby! dont we? If everything was random why have'nt we got cows with three legs or ten tails? How about people eyes! why if you beleive things are random why have people not got five eyes, then three eyes, four legs? because it is not random is it? there is a contant rational logic to life! and well designed too! Have a good day.

Well you apologized enough for your question not to seem rude. Ignorant, yes... rude, no.

Who cares about the sexual orientation of anyone, whether atheist or not or on YA or not?

What percentage of Christians are homophobic? Hmm?

The animosity can be for a few reasons.

Christians feel the need to be judgemental, to atheists, homosexuals, non-Christians, or even other Christians. Sometimes it's just trolling, but most of the time it's ignorance or otherwise doing "God's work" (ie, speaking out against homosexuality.) How tolerant do we have to be of this "Christian" attitude? I'm completely aware that not all Christians are like this, but most of the ones "witnessing" on YA do seem to be like this.

Secondly, most atheists on here were raised as Christians. Many of us know more about your own beliefs than you do. Yet the vast majority of Christians, especially the ones on here, are completely ignorant of evolution, natural selection, and basic things like logic. It's quite frustrating at times.

Most of all, theists and atheists seem to speak completely different languages. Atheists use logic, reason and science as their tools, while theists use faith and belief. The two simply don't mix.

That this causes conflict is as much the atheists fault as it is the theists, because we should be able to realize the language barrier and adapt for it. We know full well most Christians aren't interested in logic, reason and science, at least not when it comes to questioning their own faith. So we have to find a better way. You've got to forgive us, we haven't been "witnessing" for as long as you Christians have, we're still working out the bugs.

I've never known a gay atheist but I would imagine they make up about 5 to 10 percent of the Atheist community - about the same numbers in the Christian community, but without the guilt.

Christianity is a lie. Christians are ignorant of the fact that their beliefs are based on pagan mythology and that Christianity is nothing but plagiarized fiction. It's a challenge to be respectful toward someone who is so ignorant and close minded.

There are many Christians I do like, and some atheists I don't like - my responses vary in degree depending on who's doing the asking. Usually I'll follow their lead and make my response accordingly.

I am straight. I have no idea about the sexuality of most of the other posters on this board, unless they have specifically mentioned it. Because I view homosexuality as equally moral and "normal" as heterosexuality, it rarely enters my mind as important unless it is the topic at hand.

I think that most of the non-Christians that I know who have animosity towards Christians do not have it merely because of tensions due to sexuality. Most animosity comes from Christians' tendency to presuppose that we are immoral, or that we are ignorant. The other major issue that I and many of my friends have is the Christians (in the U.S.) who attempt to legislate their religious morality into law for everyone--based upon nothing other than their holy book. I have been told that my life is wrong and evil merely because I don't agree with the religious person. I have been called immoral, unethical, ignorant, and subhuman. I have been told I don't deserve to have and raise children, that I am evil, and that I can't love my country, all because I happen to be an atheist. If there is any animosity between myself and certain Christians, it is because of that.

I am an atheist but I am not gay. Your making a huge step toward stereotyping and wanting to generalize those atheists that hang out here. I think that we should all be angry at those christians who and only those which make a campaign for the sole purpose of banning gay marriage. It definitely relates to how we communicate with christians because there is a conflict there and no solution.

I'm Atheist and not gay, happily married actually. And, I don't hate all Christians. I get upset with the ones that think that because THEIR religions says something, the rest of America has to follow those rules as well. I don't have a God that tells me Gays are bad and shouldn't get married. I don't have a god that tells me I'm going to hell if I decided to not go through with a pregnancy. I don't have a God that tells me sex before marriage is bad and so is masturbation and all that.

So, if this God isn't telling me this stuff, why do I have to follow it and have it forced on me. What if we all became atheists overnight and decided that women were having too many babies and forced them to have abortions! It's ridiculous, right? Well, we feel the same way about people telling us we can't. It's insulting.

So, that is why we get upset with Christians sometimes. Among other reasons...

I am not homosexual. I would imagine that the distribution of gays throughout atheism is approximately the same as the distribution of gays across Christianity, however, not as many Christians would be openly gay, so it would be a hard statistic to determine.

All that aside, I think that Homosexuality is not a choice, it is the result of the combination between a genetic predisposition and certain experiential triggers. If it was a choice, why would anyone choose a sexual orientation that would only create persecution in their lives?

Homosexuality should not be persecuted, it should be tolerated. End.
