My family keeps telling me to go straight to collage after I graduate and it should be really close to home. I have always wanted to travel first and see things like the ocean, what should I do?

This is very important and will be helpful when making decisions. I am not sure why it occurs, but I see young people today looking at every thing as as trade off, either this or that.
You can do both. No problem. Plan to start college in the fall then travel for a few weeks.
Look into a Greyhound student pass. You can stay at youth hostiles.
As far are where to go to college, that is a really different discussion.
My opinion go to college, not too close to home.
The concern of parents is that if the young person does not go to college right away they will just get used to lounging around the house and hanging out with local buddies. And they are RIGHT. It happens all the time.
College is not like getting a job. You will have plenty of time to travel, and during your Junior or Sr year you can take a semester in Europe. That could be cool. Good luck.

TRAVEL!!!! Go out, buy yourself a backpack, a plane ticket and go. You will experiance soo many great things, meet a bunch of awsome people doing the same thing as you. School can wait, once you do go and get caught up you are done!!! Just think, travel now for a year or so and what is the differance, you will start your career, that you will have for the rest of your life 2 years later.....................If you are worried about going alone, get on a contiki tour or something, you will have the time of your life!

Go see the ocean. Then move home and go to college. Get a degree and then go see the ocean again. Do a master's degree and then go get a kickass job in the city. Save a pile and go buy a house at the beach.

Go to college first. You can always see the ocean in the future.
