I have a 1995 Firebird , that seems to have been installed with the 'premium' factory stereo system. I installed a new headunit and seems to be working perfectly but there is no sound. I read that this is caused by the factory amp. So I need to know of any possible way to make the speakers work with out having to buy the special bypass harness. Is it plausible to run a whole new set of cables to the speakers ignoring the factory amp , i dont want to use it , i just want the four speakers in the car to connect to my head unit. Please help ,thank you !

I dont know about the GM audio system, but it will be a lot better to avoid electrical failure do to the stock amp wiring, by installing new speaker wires and power wires.

Is it a Bose system, or Monsoon?

The trouble with bypassing the factory amplifier is that many GM vehicles with factory amps use speakers that are designed to work with the amp. Many Bose systems use 2-ohm or even 1-ohm speakers. Monsoon systems often use separate woofers and tweeters with dedicated amplifier channels; bypassing the amp means bypassing the built-in crossovers, which leads to speaker damage.

If you're replacing the factory speakers with after-market, then bypassing the amp makes sense. You can do this by running new speaker wires to each speaker, like you said.

If you're planning to keep the stock speakers, then you should try to integrate the stock amplifier. This might be as simple as just locating the amp turn-on wire in the factory harness and connecting it to your new head unit's remote output wire. Or you may need to purchase a special interface adapter to wire the new head unit up to the factory amp's inputs.

Gm has made some seriously mess up stereo sytems. It seems they think no one will ever want to remove the factory stereo.

Be thankful that you dont have a 00 or above, even the door chimes are wired in with the radio.

It can be done without the bypass harness, you can get directions on the internet. Although it would be much easier to just go ahead and get the harness,,,,,,I know it is more expensive but it will save you alot of trouble!

Go to a GM dealer and ask for a photo copy of it. But most of the time it is a broken wire at the starter from the ignition or loose cable at the starter or the starter itself. Sometime it could be the neutral safety switch also,it is located on the steering columb, just under the dash.and will have a couple of screws and some wires running to it. This switch is to keep the car from starting in drive or reverse for safety resons. Have fun!

if im not mistaken that car has the factory amps mounted next to or on each speaker . yes it would be better to run new speaker wires to each speaker. thats all you need to do but you should change the speakers out.

the only thing that you have to do is find the turn on wire for the factory amplifiers and turn them on
that is all
use the blue wire from the new radio
don't remove the amplifier
don't remove the speakers
add 12 volts to the pink wire
