I always see Christian VS Atheist questions, and I get the impression that they don't like each other. I don't hear much about Atheists on the news, so I don't know much about them.

Can someone please explain to me what they are and what they believe in without being biased?

Atheists either worship no god, or believe that no gods whatsoever exist. The former is called 'weak atheism' the latter 'strong atheism'.

Scientology is a religion with supernatural beliefs. By definition, no atheist can be a Scientologist.

christians and atheists fight is can be explained by just reading the comments above "people who have lost hope" thats why our economy won't survive, when we taunt and mock each other to the point of death over a simple thing like beliefs which play a big part in our lives but also the wars starting from the crusades and even now in israel and jerusalem

Atheism literally means "without god/s" and is the philosophy of a lack of belief in the existence of deities. So, an atheist is one who lacks belief that god/s exist.

That's all it means, even though many people stick other things onto it (like certain political views, etc.).

An atheist is someone who does not believe in the existance of deities.

There are scientific atheists, who base their view of the world on science, logic, and reason, and there are spiritual atheists, who don't believe in deities but may have spiritual views or even a religion, such as Buddhism or Taoism, that does not promote belief in deities.

There is also a distinction between weak and strong atheism. A 'strong' atheist believes there are no deities; a weak atheist lacks belief in deities. The difference is that weak atheists are a shade closer to agnostics.

The head-butting occurs because the opinions tend to be strong, but there is zero common ground for discussion because our views of the most basic, fundamental reality is completely different. So most attacks dissolve into sneering and ad hominem arguments.

You don't hear much about them anymore because there is no shock value left in reporting their existence, there are a great many of them these days and more keep showing up. If you believe in God and you follow the teaching of any religion you are becoming a member of a minority.

It means we don't believe any gods exist. Atheists come in two main flavors: Weak Atheists who don’t have a belief in a god, and Strong (or Positive) Atheists who believe there are definitely no gods. It’s a little more subtle than the split for Agnostics. Atheists sometimes recognize a third group as well, Apatheists (apathetic Atheists), who don’t believe in god but don’t really care about the whole issue.

And no, it isn't Scientology.

No, why would they? Scientologists think we all came from aliens and other wierd crap. Atheists don't. They just don't believe in any god. Thats all.

All Atheists beliefs are different. The only common element you'll find is that Atheists don't believe in a god.

Atheists are people who need concrete proof of a God before they will believe in it's existence. They don't hate God as many would think... It's sort of like when you need to see an Alien or Bigfoot before believing they actually exist. Real atheists don't acknowledge or deny the existence of God, they just want to see some tangible evidence that's all. ( Scientology is a cult that believes aliens will come to take over the world...)

Don't know if you're a spammer or not, taking a chance that you aren't. Athiests are those that don't believe in the existence of a higher power, ie God. Just like Thiests are those that do believe in such. Then there are the ones inbetween, Agnostics, like myself. We just don't know, and we don't take anything at face value.

I am an atheist because I don't believe in deities and the word atheist describes this state of disbelief. I don't believe in deities because no argument or evidence presented to me in support of their existence has been convincing.

1. Biology adequately describes life and emotions without appealing to mystical invisible dieties

2. Astronomy adequately describes the formation of stars/planets/universe/etc without appealing to mystical invisible dieties

3. Geology adequately describes the evolution of the Earth, land formations, etc without appealing to mystical invisible dieties

4. Psychology describes the human psyche better than appealing to mystical invisible dieties

5. Appealing to mystical invisible dieties is an appeal to ignorance

6. There's no physical evidence for the existence of mystical invisible dieties

7. A myriad of mystical invisible dieties have been posited by emphatically superstitious societies and have been proven to be products of overly active imaginations (today's religion is tomorrow's myth) and ignorance.

8. Believing in mystical invisible dieties seems to become quite absurd when those who posit the mystical invisible dieties begin explaining why and how they exist in the face of contradictory physical evidence.

9. As scientific knowledge increases, the role of the mystical invisible dieties oddly gets pushed further and further back.

10. Mystical invisible dieties are mystical invisible dieties (ie can never be found by empirical methods)

That should be enough to get you started.
