Because His friends were crying with grief at the loss of Lazarus. Jesus was overwhelmed by their sadness. How wonderful and compassionate is God.

Jesus wept because he cared. The context surrounding this text shows that Jesus was visiting Mary (not the mother of Jesus) and Martha, and their brother, Lazarus, has died. They were going to visit the tomb and they started weeping. Jesus wept with them because of their grief. He was not weeping because he was sad over the loss of Lazarus because he knew that Lazarus would raise from the dead (as it shows in the surrounding text), but Mary and Martha were grieved, so Jesus was grieved as well.

Jesus cried for His friend Lazarus who had died. He was fully human and felt the same emotions that we feel. He felt the pains of death that we all go thru, even tho He was going to bring Lazarus back, it was the separation of death that overcame Him

we discussed this in one of our classes at church. most ppl think it's bc/ Lazarus was dead (and Jesus was mourning along with the mourners). in the message version it states that Jesus was "angry" bc/ they still despite being his close friends did not have faith that He could do the impossible which was why he prayed out loud to God when he raised lazarus. the real answer is that we don't know.

He had already told Mary and the others that accompanied her earlier in the chapter, "thy brother shall rise again". He wept because they didn't believe.
