You can use a BMI calculator. This helps you calculate your ideal weight. I don't think your overweight right now. I think the most efficient way to gain muscle tone and to lose weight is to run. BUT, first you want to consult you doctor to make you don't have any serious health problem that running would just complicate. ALSO road running is a lot more efficient than running on a treadmill (you can run for less and burn more calories). If you run just for 30 minutes everyday at your own pace and have one resting day(run every day but say Saturday) you will be in you ideal shape in about 2 weeks. AND the best thing is that you can eat whatever you want. PLUS there are many reward for winning races (like the last one I was at the prize was 500$). If you start you will that running is extremely enjoyable.

There is no "ideal weight" persay. The BMI is calculated for men and women who does light exercise and eat a moderate 3 meals per day with snacks in between. Take for instance my brother. He is 5'8 and weighs 180. The BMI says he should be overweight, but he is all muscle. So instead of losing weight, you should concentrate on losing fat. Running and aerobic exercise loses fat all around. Instead of eating 3 square meals a day, break it up into 6 small meals. It would keep you fuller throughout the day as well as help raise your metabolism.

Hope this helps!

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

Your weight should, technically be fine. But that depends doesn't it on what you want-

"Technically" your weights sounds fine, by U.S. standards. My husband is from Japan, he is 36, 5'12, and 172 pound, he is a judo black belt, and this is the heavy side of normal in Japan, so he is considered plump in Japan but slender in the U.S.

-Fat wiegh less than muscle, meaning 1 pound of fat is MUCH bigger than a pound of lean muscle.

So if you want to change the shape of your body, either exercise to make it more lean, exercise more to bulk it up. If you tend to find yourself sitting allot, fit the floor and do push ups, sit ups, squats and lunges . Men see results faster than women. (not fair! :-<) but that is the way it is.

good luck, (and sitting around worrying about it, is the worst thing you can do - go out and DO something - also cut down on the fast food!)
