My cousin called his grandmother "Nana", but her name was Mary. I was told that it was a term often used in European countries, like Austria, where his great grandparents were from.

I think this is Swedish and I'm sure my spelling is probably incorrect. The name would depend on if the grandmother is maternal or paternal. Mir (spelled as you would pronounce it) is mother, so if it is the mother's mother the word would be mir mir, and if it was the father's mother i would be far mir (spelled as it is pronounced = father's mother). Same principle for grandfather (mir far or far far), great-grand parents, etc.

Some of us call her Grandmother (they're half VietNamese)... some, like me, its Gran...
the little ones call her Granny...
anything else (in particular - Gramma)... you might get backhanded.
