You have to keep them out. They get very soft and brown very quickly if you put them in the fridge. But if you want to make banana bread with them, then by all means, cool away.

Unripe bananas should not be stored in the refrigerator because the cold temperature will keep them from completing the ripening process. Ripe bananas can be stored in the refrigerator for a few days to keep them from ruining. Once they are placed in the refrigerator their peel will turn brown but but the banana itself is still good.
Ripe bananas can be mashed and then frozen. When mashing, add a little lemon juice to prevent the fruit from discoloring. The mashed bananas can be placed in air tight freezer bag and stored in the freezer for up to two months. You can use the frozen bananas in recipes such as fruit shakes or they can be thawed and used in breads, cakes and muffins. If you put a banana on a stick and dip it in chocolate you can freeze it for a delicious health treat.

I like them out. They don't last that much longer in the fridge anyway. Either way, you're going to end up with some soft bananas. You can slice these and saute' them in butter for breakfast. Sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar. You can also mash some up and mix in pancake batter.

in the refrigerator will slow the ripening process by a few days. The outside of the banana will turn brown, but inside the banana will be firm and sweet.

Yes you can re-fridge. We do it all the time. The only thing is the cold does is turn the peel brown, but it does stop the banana from getting overripe.

Normally I keep them out on the counter, but if I want them not to get too riped or if I want a healthy, sweet treat I put them in the frig!

out if not ripe yet. if ripe enough, i found that having it in the fridge keeps it well. the peel will start darkening and looking funny but when opened, it looks perfectly fine! esp good if planning to make banana nut bread
