Because the peanut butter side is heavier.
It's basic physics.

This is really basic science. It's called the law of stickus atraractus messycus. Being that the peanut butter is sticky and will create a mess far greater than the naked bread, it is required by the above law of poopus that it hits the floor sticky side down. The second corollary is often engaged at this point, which is .... some body's gonna step in the mess and track it everywhere or the cat will track it up the nearest wall and across the couch.

I think that Myth Busters episode #34 proved that it is actually 50/50% that bread will fall butter/peanut butter/jelly side down.

the peanut butter side is heavier so that is the side it is going to fall on

That side is heavier, so the bread turns with that side facing the ground if there is room and time enough for it to do so.

actually my science class disproved that it lands on either side it's like flipping a coin it may seem like it lands on one side more but it's really a 50/50 chance of it landing on either side...unless you put peanut butter on both sides XP

LOL - that's my fave sandwich and damned if I haven't wondered the exact same thing. I'm gonna go with Murphy's Law!

(In fact, maybe we could get them to add that one to the end!)

hahha probably because its heavier
and the pull of gravity makes the heavier side fall faster so it lands that way
or maybe its karma! ;)
just kidding!
