I never post a link. NEVER. However, I am in Pharmacy 1 in college and doing drug cards for class, and this was the one I chose to do. The site is extremely useful.

Alprazolam or Xanax is a member of the benzodiazepine family. Benzodiazepines are sedatives that cause dose-related depression of the central nervous system. They are useful in treating anxiety, insomnia, and muscle spasms.
Alprazolam is used for the treatment of anxiety disorders and panic attacks. Anxiety disorders are characterized by unrealistic worry and apprehension, causing symptoms of restlessness, aches, trembling, shortness of breath, smothering sensation, palpitations, sweating, cold clammy hands, lightheadedness, flushing, exaggerated startle responses, problems concentrating, and insomnia. Panic attacks occur either unexpectedly or in certain situations (i.e. driving), and can require higher dosages of alprazolam.
The most frequent side effects of alprazolam taken at lower doses are drowsiness or lightheadedness, which probably reflect the action of the drug. Side effects of higher dosages (those used for panic attacks) include fatigue, memory problems, speech problems, constipation, and changes in appetite with resultant changes in weight.
In any case, simply taking medication alone does not eradicate the root of the problem. You need to see a clinical psychologist, who will help explore why you're suffering from nervous attacks, and teach you some coping strategies to help with minimizing future attacks.

I take it as needed for anxiety. I take 0.5 mg on occasion, when I am experiencing severe anxiety. I would suggest you take it at bedtime to start out because it can make you feel very sleepy. DO NOT DRIVE until you know how it wil affect you!
Please be cautious about this medication - it can be very addictive and is dangerous to quit cold-turkey when you've been on it steadily for an extended period of time. If taken with care and lots of talks with your doctor, it is very effective.

In small doses and not taken very often, the side effects are few. It can relax you and help you to sleep. It is a central nervous system depressant and as such can worsen any emotional depressive problems you might have.

I think you got the "baby" dosage . . . but, after you take it . . . if someone runs over your foot with their car . . . you're gunna say, "Wow, I think someone just ran over my foot . . . smooooooth."
