find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.

I applaud you for wanting to help your friend. I myself was once 285 lbs and only 5'4". I know about the terrible back pains and the intimidation of looking at fit people while trying to exercise yourself. Having a supportive friend as yourself is key, you can help motivate her maybe even by walking with her until she finds comfort on her own. She will need to make better selections of the foods she eats and up the exercise. Those are important in any weight loss regime. Reducing the amount of calories she consumes is also essential. Try www.fitday.com if she would like to track what she eats. I did this and tracked what I ate on a typical day before I lost my weight. Before I was eating as much as 5000 calories a day, and most of that was from carbonated beverages. Now I maintain about 1500-2000 calories.
If there is a fresh produce market, such as a farmer's market, where she could get great veggies and fruit for a fraction of a price, that would be a start. Eating more veggies and fruits and lean meats and fish is a great way to lose weight. But for it to happen she has to be ready to make a change. Temptations will always be there, the key is learning to control those temptations and not letting them get the best of you. There are many diets you can do on a low-budget. I did a variation of Atkins which helped me lose 130 lbs in a little over a year. Try sites such as www.atkins.com or www.southbeach.com or ediets.com. There she can or you can look at different diets that may be right for her. One must realize that not every diet is right for every person.

An hour's worth of housework, cleaning and the like, burn on average 200 calories. If she can't seem to stay away from sweet stuff then don't make her completely cut them out and just at first cut back on them. Instead of two candy bars have one and a mini.
It's going to be a hard struggle but the end will come. Set short goals that are easier to meet then the far off ones.

she might be a compulsive over eater and she should go to OA meetings they helped me alot. OA is just like AA except for over eating. you can go to the website. http://www.oa.org/index.htm As for dieting though I really liked the point system of weight watchers but also really like the idea of the blood type diet. but as an compulsive overeater it isn't that you need to go on a diet it's that you need to realize that you have a disease and follow the 12 steps to recovery
