Lobbies with lots of money, OOPS, I mean influence, combined with legislators that don't know their helmet from their seat belt.

Do you really expect a politician to know anything about car safety? They are told what to believe by lobbyists.

Funny, I was just wondering that the other day. I suppose wearing seat belts gets more attention since there are many more people who drive cars. Not to mention children ride in the cars too. Either way I don't think government has any right to dictate that people wear seat belts, avoid fatty foods, or whatever. People should have the right to make personal decisions even if they are stupid.

Dang good question. I would go so far as to say because one unnecessary law doesn't always begat another.

Do we really need either of those to be laws? Yes, it makes perfect sense to do both of those. I agree that you SHOULD do both of those. I wore my seatbelts and helmets long before anyone ever talked about making it a requirement. I also know plenty of people who don't wear a seatbelt. I personally wouldn't forgo the safety myself, but I do believe it's their choice. It's not like the law made them change their mind either. They still don't wear it.

We have too many driving laws on the books already. We don't need more, we just need to enforce the onces we have.

The seatbelt law is federal and if the states don't implement it, the Fed will take away their highway money. Evidently this is not the case with the helmet law.

If everyone wore helmets and seat belts, where would they get organ donors.

Just kidding. Money and influence of course.

I agree with you. Motorbikes are fast and the head is a very delicate part of the body.

Here in California, both are illegal.

Different states have different laws; it's just one reflection of the fact that the states have the right to make their own laws as long as they don't conflict with federal laws.
