It was a networked computer at the office. At home we also have a network. Our router has four ports, three already used. Fourth port is connected successfully to this computer. The internet tests "ping" successfully, but connection never occurs. Any ideas?

Thank you for your answers; they were all great suggestions. We tried all of the first four answers. A couple of them we had already tried, but tried again. NONE of them have worked. Can you think of anything else?

Go to the tcp/ip properties for your connection and set everything to auto. Check the advanced tab in case any settings are held there. In IE go to tools/internet options and check connections, set never dial a connection, then check the lan settings in case a button there is on, they should all be off. Try the connection again. Re-post if you still fail.

Within Internet Explorer click tools internet options then click the Connections tab. Click the LAN button and clear all check marks then click apply/ok. Close the browser, reopen and see if you are connecting. You may have had a proxy set on the office machine that isn't working from home.
Not sure that is it, but it is worth checking.

I bet you still have a DHCP address from your office.

Go to, Start>>Run>> Type CMD to open a command prompt.

Type,
c:>ipconfig /relese (enter)

After some output and a success, type the command,

C:>ipconfig /renew (enter)

Good Luck.
