I'm sick of their babble of church and the bible but I believe and want to believe in God. Can I honestly be a Christian but not believe in all the crap they believe or do I have to become agnostic just to escape their clutches?

I've read the Bible and I think it's all hogwash...mythology. It's a book of good lessons, but I don't take it literal. But it's the people who want to take the bible and just slam it down your throat that make me ashamed to call myself christian.

I hear what you are saying, and I feel your pain.
It isn't difficult for a discerning Christian to see that the church is in apostasy. We should have seen it coming, but we left the back door open, and that old serpent slithered in. In too many churches, he's made it all the way to the pulpit.
Certainly, judgment begins at the House of God.
Having said that, I might also tell you that, it would be better if you could find a few like-minded people and maybe have your own worship, or, if not, go to a local church you can all agree on together. There is strength in numbers, I think that is why we are taught not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together. And there is always the chance, although not much of one, that you might be able to work from the inside and help people who are caught in Satan's church-trap.
Good luck to you, Hun, and God bless!!

ummm... you said that you are ashamed to call yourself a christian?

You are not a christian.
You obviously don't even believe in the bible or what it says. To read and understand it is to gaze upon the very face of God. So, to answer your question: No. You can't call yourself a christian and take out certain things and leave others in. What you want to do is create a god in your own image. A transgression of the 2nd commandment. Don't get me wrong. People do it. Go find yourself a good old universalist church. I'm sure you'd be satisfied there. They believe in everything.

Maybe this will help. I don't consider myself to be a Christian as the dictionary definition for Christian is Christ-like. I am certainly not Christ-like. I do not attend church as organized religion irritates me. I believe in God and parts of the Bible such as the ten commandments, the lords prayer, the parables of Jesus, and the like. Basically the parts that tell you how to live a good life. I have done research on a variety of religions including paganism and picked and chose the things I believe to be good. I have daily talks with God and have a close spiritual relationship. I subscribe to no one faith. I don't feel that I am in the "clutches" of anyone but God's. I kind of like it that way. And I think He approves as well.

Maybe you can develop your own "religion" as I did and get on a spiritual level with God. And if the Christians don't like it, well all that really matters is how you and God like it.

Maybe you need to look at things differently. I truly feel I am a Christian and a good Christian but I feel like church is a business that only want's money and guilt you into giving it to them. I feel that I am closer to god when I am one with nature or doing something kind for someone - i love to do random acts of kindness, annonomously. Like clean up a fallen tree for a single mother, deliver groceries to a poor person and leave them on their door step, send gifts to a depressed friend that will cheer them up. Maybe it isn't that you are not Christian but anti-church. I believe that god wanted us to be our own person and that no one is totally without sin however we are human and make mistakes and commit sin. I believe that everyone will go to heaven except the extreme sinners: murders, child molesters, and abusive people (including clergy.... i.e. priests/clergy who molested children). If you are like me, I would definatley consider a non-demoninational church (one who does not send my money on to a higher sorce of the church but uses it within the church I attend and for local charities or charities of the church members' choice)! I don't think that being a steady bible reader or clergy puts you on the highway to heaven. I have met some pretty rude clergy and self-called christians in my life and I don't think god would be happy with how "Christian they are". So my thoughts are - live the best life you can live, try not to intentionally hurt, betray or wrong anyone. Believe in God and Christ and know the bible as much as possible. If you find a church you really enjoy and believe in.... then by all means... join it, get involved and support it as much as you can, but don't let anyone guilt you into it ... because if there is a god, and just belive that he is a forgiving god and a loving god an that he is not after your money... however, if you choose not to give to any church tithe by giving money to the needy or other causes that god would support... or volunteer - you know time is money! I truly think that our god thought of tithing as a way of donating money and time to the poor sick and the elderly. good luck. P.S. have you ever noticed that the higher up you are in a church the more you live like a king! And that those kings tell you how you need to give more or your money to the church! Believe in god not churches!

I really don't think it's possible to become a Christian while denying the Bible. Because of this, it logically follows that I would say that Christianity needs the Bible, and in the Bible, Christians are told that fellowship is essential. So, to answer your question, I'd say you cannot honestly be a Christian without a typical set of beliefs held by the majority of mainstream Christians.

X-rated, going agnostic might be your only solace. Being an official Christian, wasn't possible until about 325 A.D. Before that, you could have thought about Jesus the way you wanted. In 325 A.D. or so, they had this big synod or council in Nicaea. Came up with the Nicene Credo, (better known as the Apostle's Creed). Them's the official rules for being a Christian. You can view Jesus and the Bible the way you want. Unless you subscribe to the Nicene Credo, "begotten not made of one being ......." you can't "officially" call yourself a Christian. Welcome to agnosticism.

If you still want to believe in God but not everything the bible says (I don't believe a lot of what it has to say myself), then just call yourself a theist. If you believe that everything has a cause and that the first cause must be God, then you can call yourself a causal theist. If you believe that the universe is a complex and amazing thing with a machine-like order to it so God must have created it (sort of like a watchmaker), then call yourself a design theist. You don't have to be a christian to believe in God. Most religions have a God, they just have different names for Him. Study and find out what sounds right to you.

Umm... If you don't believe the Bible then you can't believe in God... The Bible is the very cornerstone of the Christian faith. Although I agree that many churches are filled with self-righteous, hypocritical worms do not doubt the Bible because a few obnoxious hypocrites do.

When you look at Christians, you might think we're hypocritical and judgemental. You're probably right. We're all like that, it's just for some reason, some Christians think that they can express it because they are "saved." But the truth is we all have our faults, and we all need a Savior to forgive us. Just think about this....your not accepting me. your not accepting your pastor. your not accepting people who are all talk. You are accepting my Lord and Savior who is the only one who will give you peace, who is the only one who is fully just and is the only one who actually practices everything he preaches. So dont "accept" religion, dont "accept" all the mumbo-jumbo, accept the true, un-watered down, loving God.

can i get an amen?

oh by the way about your additional info. go try to prove the bible wrong or read books about people who tried to. they all ended up becoming saved. theres is overwhelming proof. so do that, research, read, whatever. youll believe it then :)

My question for you would be, 'Have you read the bible?'
Christianity is about a relationship with Jesus - not about religion or other humans.
You can choose to believe what you want. As long as you line yourself up with what is in the bible and have asked Jesus to be your personal Lord and Savior - then you're good.
I am a strong Christian, however, set myself apart from 'mainstream' Christianity, because of my liberal views.
Ultimately, God knows what is in your heart and you will be judged based on your heart condition - not what you believed or said here on Earth.
Good Luck to you in your search.
