Probably. Most subwoofers can take both pre-amp line level (highly unlikely the stereo system you'll be getting will have this) and the same wiring & signal that speakers take. So... make sure the subwoofer you get has "speaker" wire inputs (left and right) and output for the same (this means the sub has to have an amplifier built in), then then wire your stereo to the sub, then the sub to the left and right speakers. However - this kind of "active" subwoofer might be expensive when compared to the stereo itself. On the other hand, if possible, get a "surround sound" system with a subwoofer output. Then you can upgrade it with better speakers and a sub as necessary and as you can afford it (the main issue with "system in a box" products is typically the speakers you get are poor quality).

Velodyne makes some great sounding subs, but they are somewhat prone to malfunctioning amps. Ditto with Definitive Tech.

Depending on the price, I LOVE the Paradigm Seismic. In my humble opinion, they BLOW away the Velodyne dollar for dollar. Sunfires are outstanding as well.

Depending on the size of the room, you might want to go with the Sunfire Super Cube Jr. It is a tiny little sub that sounds like it is much bigger. Or for a little more punch go with the Paradigm Seismic 12.

Opinions vary, but for myself, I am a fan of using two 8 in subwoofers in place of a 12 in. Or using two dual 8 or 10 in subs in place of a 15 or 18.

Velodyne does make some kick *** subs, but I think they're a bit over priced.

Check out SVS subs (especially their Cylinder subs)

Also look at Hsu Research subs

They're both online only outfits, so the costs are a lot lower and I've heard nothing but good things about both companies.

beasties.... is right on the money.

SVS and HSU are the bang for the buck champions. Dollar for dollar, they'll blow away anything else you can buy.
