There is a knocking in the engine but we can still get it started and when it goes into gear the knocking gets softer. We had someone take a look at it and said that it is probably the left lifter. My husband follows directions well and can always fix the car that way. Anyone have any advice and/or a website that we can use for a referance? Thanks!

use the manufacturers repair manual

aka shop service manual... costs way more than a chilton or haynes but... well worth it.

If you have a four cylinder in there, which I'm sure you probably do, it will likely have 16 valves and lifters... so there really isn't a left lifter. Go on autozone's website, they have fix it info on there, or buy a Chilton manual for your car.

A lifter is NOT a simple thing to replace. I'm not very familiar with Nissan motors, but you'll probably have to take off the timing belt, and maybe the cam(s), and probably lots of other things to even get at these parts. I think it's also necessary to change them all if you are changing one.

I would say DO NOT try this unless you know what you are doing. Take it to a reputable mechanic and have them fix it. Whoever told you it is the left lifter is probably not the one you want to fix your car.

I think more diagnosis is necessary the 1.6 liter engine has a couple of things that can knock and rattle. The timing chain guide and tensioner is one of them. As the guide wears down the chain starts slapping the timing cover until it wears a hole in it. Other knocking comes from the connecting rod bearings and if you pull each plug wire one at a time you can make the noise change. Automatic transmission cars can have loose torque converter bolts or cracked flex plate that can also make knocking sound. On a 15 year old car it can be almost any loose engine part. Frequency the number of Knocks per crank shaft turns Knock that gets loulder when reving the engine all help the real technician find the noise maker.

Talk to the Instructor of a local high school car mechanic class or Community college for better information and diagnosis on the tapping sound. They know how to explain and teach you what your hearing and the difference between a lifter and a connecting rod....the latter being Much worse. Ask about the use of Marvel Mystery Oil to loosen up the stuck lifter.

HERE'S A SIMPLE WAY TO TRY AND GET IT UNSTUCK. FIRST TELL YOUR HUSBAND TO TRY "ENGINE FLUSH" THIS WILL CLEAN ALL THE OIL LINES IN THE ENGINE FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS ON THE CAN CAREFULLY THEN PUT A THIN SYNTHETIC OIL SUCH AS 0W-15 OR SOMETHING SIMILAR, DON'T FORGET THE OIL FILTER. ALSO RUN "BG MOA" YOU CAN GET THIS AT NAPA. AFTER ALL THIS IT SHOULD RELEASE. LET IT IDLE FOR A WHILE SEE IF THE SOUND GETS LESS AND LESS. I RECOMMEND THIS BEFORE YOU TEAR INTO A MAJOR CYLINDER HEAD REPAIR AS CHANCES ARE THIS WILL DO IT AND SHOULD COST LESS THAN $50 WHEN DONE. BEST OF LUCK.
