When do I sew on the rank on my clothes? before or after the BMT graduation ceremony? is it something I have to go do myself at BX or what..?

before graduation....Your TI will tell you were to get it done. There is an alteration place over at lackland where all the trainees get it sewed on.

edjdonnel is wrong. If you come into the military with some kind of rank, your date of rank will start from the day you start basic however you will not put on the actual rank until right before graduation from BMT. You will wear your rank during your graduation ceremony.

After the Ceremony, no rank in BMTS, you can sew on a pair yourself when told that you are allowed to, and before hand you can send yuor uniforms to the get the stripes sewn on, but you do have to pay fto have them sewn on, I have no Idea how much that cost, I use to sew my own on, and also for a others for a few bucks.

If you come into the AF with no additional rank, you will leave bmt with no rank. You won't put it on until tech school or your first base. Can sometimes depend on tech school. Trust me... you see plenty of Airmen Babies wandering around on their first duty station with nothing on their arms.
As for sewing them on, there is alterations/cleaners, do it your self, one of the other troops, or there is generally a spouse in every squadron who sews on stripes for a minimal charge. The folks in your work unit will help you out or ask your supervisor.
