As someone who was recently hospitalized, I can tell you that many patients are encouraged to get up and walk around soon after surgery. It helps them recover faster, helps prevent blood clots, pneumonia, etc. I stayed inside, but it would have been nice to have an outside area that wasn't open to idiots like you. I could have used a little fresh air and sunshine. Instead, I walked around the halls of the hospital (with the i.v. and everything) Not everyone in a hospital is sick.

It really all depends why the person is in the hospital. If it's to give birth, I think women should be allowed to walk around (in the hallway, of course). It helps speed up labor.
If the person is highly contageous, they should be confined to their room.
If it's someone who's going to be there for a while (cancer patients, surgery patients [especially those who have surgery laparascopically and their abdomen is filled with air, and walking alleviates the horrible pain of it], etc.) I think they should be allowed to leave the room (whether they're able to walk or have to be pushed in a wheel chair). Most hospitals I've been in are rather drab, and you can only watch so much TV. A little fresh air never hurt anyone.
And being in the hospital after giving birth isn't the same as being there for other reasons. As a woman who just gave birth, you shouldn't WANT to leave your room--you should want to spend time bonding with your baby. As for looking horrible--you're in a hospital--not on a runway in Paris. Who cares how you look? You're there to get well--not to have your picture taken by Glamour Shots.
I don't have a problem with most people walking around, as long as they're properly covered. Spend a week or two in the hospital and I'm sure you'll be singing a different tune.

For one thing there are some people that smoke, and cannot do so in a hospital. Secondly there are people that are required to walk short distances to aid in their healing process. As well did you ever stop to think that man you seen could have been enjoying his final breaths of fresh air? Take a moment next time to think a little deeper than the lovely hospital garb, and more about the person under it!

As someone who has been in the hospital for an extended amount of time I completly disagree. After a few days of staying in bed to recover I was told to get up and walk around. I stayed on my floor, but can understand how someone there for months would want to get outside. Patients need to regain strength, and have to bring IVs with them. Please understand sick people are focusing on getting better, not appeasing you. For all you know that man could have been dieing, and enjoying his last days in the sun. Shame on you for making anyone feel bad for this.

Maybe if their gowns didn't have that opening in the back, it'd be less gross. But people should be able to walk around rather than stay in the bed. How boring for them! Have some compassion. Being in a hospital sucks enough without you getting crabby about seeing a sick person.

Its... a... hospital...
Did you expect to drive by and see an amusement park? A roller coaster? A Tilt-A-Whirl (my favorite ride by the way).
Maybe you thought you would drive by and see a tent, some circus elephants, tigers.
Hospitals are places that people go to, in order to recover from a serious injury or illness, don't look at it as being negative, look at as though this person is well enough to be able to walk outside on there own and will hopefully be going home to there family.
You stayed in your room, that was your choice, you could have went outside, and you didn't, but that was your choice, a hospital should not feel like a prison...

Well, I was in the hospital in 2002 for my back surgery and
I did not heal correctly, but I was there for a week...
I had to get well enough to walk so I could go home...
I was so sore and had so much trouble walking and even moving in bed...
It took 2 nurses to turn me over in bed when
I got too sore in being in one position too long...
You take your movements for granted in normal sleeping in your bed at home, but in a hospital and you have had surgery, it is miserable to stay there all the time...
I wanted to go out and get a fresh scene or fresh air and it was painful to do so...
I hope you never have to experience the pain of major surgery like some of these fine folks have and want to go get fresh air and sun in your face...
It is a wonderful feeling to get the sun on you or even a few drops of rain or a nice cool breeze if there is one...
Hospital air seems so stale and smells like medicine all the time...
By the way, people are allowed to bring their own sleeping attire and robes and slippers to the hospital with them and even wear them...
I certainly did and I had my makeup and brush with me as well...
I was too proud to look bad as well as feel bad...

thats kind of ignorant part of recovering is getting up and being able to be mobile, and they make you do that a lot quicker these days. Its also not good to stay in bed for too long a lot of people get sick that way. i mean i know you look like **** but i mean god only knows what theyve been through and they need to recover and the hospital needs to help with that. it has changed though. i had major surgery in 94 and it took like a week and a half for them to get me walking. but my mom had pretty major surgery also in 2003 and the second day she was walking a little. thats just how they do it now.

As hospital patients get better they are encouraged to get up and move about to recover more quickly. This is essential to get the circulation going. We need to have compassion for the sick and not find them repulsive if they dont look their best. None of us will be in perfect health forever and that hospital patient could be us one day.

As long as people are not infectious, it is up to their doctors whether or not they can leave their rooms.
When my dad was terminally ill in the hospital, if he felt like wandering around then we took him around. Too bad if others thought of it as gross. He had only a couple of months to live and we wanted him to enjoy the time he had left.
